Double bits unmarked. Was that common?

I have a couple double bit axes that I know are at least 40 years old, but the heads don't have any marks on them. Where there certain companies that would have made budget models with no stamps? Thanks

Many 'store brand' axes featured only paper or foil labels despite having been manufactured by any one of a dozen of the big manufacturers.

I seem to recall quite a few people corroborating with 300Six's post. It wasn't too uncommon for hardware stores to buy unmarked axes from the big makers and slap a label for their store on the axe.

Unmarked is common. Also some axes are very lightly marked, even without dirt & corrosion near impossible to see.
