Can any blade be made double cut or does it have to come that way originally. Say if I wanted an axe to be double cut to match my Sus Scrofa?

My understanding is that the Busse Double Cut finish is a two stage bead blast finish. You should be able to do a decent duplication of it if you have access to bead blasting equipment.

if you have a blasting cabinet/gun, you could give it a satin-ish finish with a scotchbrite then bead blast it.

Stinky posted the process a while back.

A simple search should turn it up.

Double cut rocks....

Definately, just a matter of finding the right blasting media to match the factory finish. Basically you need to start with a smooth finish, like 400 grit off the grinder, then a coarse blast followed by bead blasting. Not sure how much initial roughness you can get away with, since most makers I know who use ceramic/glass bead don't use a coarse pre-blast.

Yoda has it...

Depends on the initial smoothness of the blade for Busse to double cut it. I recently sent in a blade to have double cut, but it was too thin (.187") and the surface below was not smooth enough. To get it smooth enough would have made the blade too thin for it's intended purpose...

Can you go the opposite direction? Is it possible to satinize a double-cut blade? How would you do it?

Easy as pie, just get a 3 dollar scotchbrite wheel (I like the ones without the sandpaper flaps, others seem to prefer them though). I bought mine at Sears, 3 inch diameter and it chucks directly into a drill. Clamp the knife securely and hit it with the scotchbrite wheel and it's all good. Alternatively you can hand rub it with some wet/dry sandpaper and use oil/water as a lubricant. With some care this will give it that hand satin finish you see on many custom knives. You can do both with a regular coated blade as well but it's usually alot more work due to the rough finish of the steel.

Back in the day and probably still the same, blades were brought to a satin finish first, then done up with a particular ceramic media.

Was going to get some, but it would have been 2 or 3x more than the blast cabinet.:eek:
