I just won this gerber off e bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6610888803&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1
and wanted to run a few questions by the fellow forum members, Is there anything I should be aware of on a knife with a broken tip?
Did I pay too much for this knife with a broken tip?
Will I be able to reshape the tip without the blade looking too short?
Is there any way to date this knife? I wanted this knife for carry and I really dont have too much experience with broken tips, I have reground on my pilots survival knife with a few wet rocks and every thing seems ok. Thanks for any help, John

You don't need to lose any length, you can just increase the drop of the point, this will lower penetration and gain strength. If you keep the exact same profile the length will only be reduced by a small fraction of an inch.

I agree with Mr. Stamp. I've retipped similiar knives for people.

Pay too much? I don't think so. I feel the older Gerbers are better in that model, and I had one with that sheath that peformed well. Gotta watch the tip on any knife of that type, as it is thin (but a good penetrator in soft material and a good slicer).

Thanks guys for the replies. I had one like this when I was younger and I realy did not want to pay $70 for a nib guardian, so I went with this one. I was hoping that the blade would not look to short after retipping it. I realy like the older ones because I think the rubber handles catch on jeans and such when being deployed. Thanks again for the help. John
