Well I finished this one last week, and it will slice and dice and peel and shave both coming and going. Forged 5160,single quenched and triple tempered, Aol 12 1/2" w/7 1/4" blade, Brass guard with birdeye maple handle and homemade pins, made of brass tube, square brass tube and a piece of brass pin filled with dyed black epoxy. This one was fun to make but keeping the grind lines even and making the guard equal on top and bottom was a pain in the butt. Blade is 1 1/2" wide at widest spot and is very well balanced. I don't think I'll make another for a while but it was a nice change. What cha think?:D

Bill, Thats a nice dagger! I can see why you want to take a break, those double edges are hard on the nerves. Nice ricasso, difficult grind I bet.

bill is this the new coote grinder at work? what ever you did it on it is great. i really like the balance of the whole package. and the leaf blade is excellent.

Nice knife. Leaf style blades have always been one of my favs.
I like that triangle ricasso. Looks like it was a p.i.a. to do.

Laurence,

Yea, its the coote at work. You was right when you said the coote set up with varible pulleys was well worth the money. I completed a hunter with a forged in gut hook yesterday( another pain) w/ a finger grip handle, the small wheel that I got with the coote sure made that a lot easier. Thanks for your advise. I'll post a picture of it today or tomorrow so you can see what I mean. I love my coote.;)

WOW!, that's really nice Bill. That shape blade always reminds of Lord of the Rings and elves and such. Great job. Did you do a differential heat treat on it?
Regards, Greg

Thanks guys for all the kind words, this one was a test of nerves but a fun project.

Ripper, I guess you could say it was differential heat treated, I took centaur and Bruce Bumps suggestions a while back and used furnace cement. I ran a piece of masking tape about 1/4" in from the edge all the way around the blade, both sides. Then put 1/4"- 3/8" of cement over the blade, let it set a while and then peeled the tape off, that left every thing covered except the edges, nice and straight to, left over night then heated quick and quenched the whole blade. the edges would skate a file but it left the center soft to where the file would take a good bite, it worked great. I put it in a vise with a 1/4" rod on both ends and one in the middle, like you would do to straighten, tightened the vise down to where the blade was touching the vise in the middle, when I released the vise it straightened out straight as an arrow, no damage anywhere. So I would say those guys knew what they were talking about. Theres a lot of good info on this forum.;)

Bruce,

I'm sure it would work against a terrroist, but I never had the arm strength for that hand to hand stuff. I'd rather shoot the SOBs before they got that close.
