Has anyone had any experiance or knowledge of double quenching s30v and or other high end steels. Please advise

Huh??? Double Quenching? Why?

I'm not sure I understand - but I'm willing to be educated..... :)

For the same reason you should triple quench carbon steels, to refine grains size . I belive that steels such as cpm3v & s30v end up a little harder as a result. These steels need to get the temp down fast. I use frozen quench plates to quench but I think with tapered tangs & distal tapers the contact with the steel is not good enough thus parts of the blade cool to slow. By double quenching I think you think you get a more coplete conversion, My blades come out 1 to 2 rc harder with a double quench ( file tests). I would like to know if anyone else is doing this or has found any rsearch on it. I can not think of any negitives to doing this.

OK... Still listening. So after you heat to austenizing temp and soak for 15 - 30 min and then plate quech - you do it all over again? I was under the impression that consistent fine grain and carbide formation was the big strength of the CPM steels.

One more question if I may. How do you measure 1 - 2 points RHC with a file test? Even hardness testing files are 5 points apart.

I can't find any reference to it in crucibles spec sheets on those steels. I thought the CPM steels were supposed to reduce or eliminate problems with grain irregularity and even carbide formation.

Also, have you tried LN or dry ice? That will give you 1 or 2 RHC point - by the spec sheets and by RHC testing.

Good topic. I wonder if it should be move to Shop Talk?

Thanks

S30V is an excellent steel , don't screw it up with weird HT !!!

It is not a weird ht. All better made carbon steel knives are triple quenched. I am convinced my blades are little harder with this method and unless someone can tell me any reason it should not be done this way I will continue with this method. I have shaped enough metal thruout the years that I have a pretty good feel for small changes in hardness with the files. I pack in dry ice after the first temper. I feel S30 v is a good steel, It will be great when I can achieve 62-64 rc with out chipping. At that hardness I think it will perform as well as 3V but without having to worry about rust.

They triple quench to get fine grain in simple steels . S30V has vanadium to give it fine grain !!!!
