Double question

1) How can you tell if there is a small roll in the edge? The tip of my SPY27 native has a shiny spot on the edge but it doesn’t catch my fingernail if I run it over it. I can’t get a clear picture.

2) The PM2 in Cruwear is still tempting. Any experience with cruwear rusting?

1) Get a jeweler's eye loupe. Look down the edge with a light source behind and slightly above it. Changing the angle left and right slightly should show any edge deflection under the magnification.

2) Cruwear is not a stainless steel. It has more chromium than the common higher carbon steels (ie, 1095, 5160, etc.), but it will still rust if not maintained.

It may not adequately answer the question but I would strop it or run it on the fine Spyderco ceramic sticks and see if it goes away. If it goes away it probably was a roll or a burr and it’s gone

i would strop the edge on the spy27, second I have been using my CruWear PM2 for a solid month even prep work in the kitchen and have not got any rust on it. Just wipe it dry after use and your good to go.

That’s what I’ve been hearing. Just wipe it dry and it’s ok. I have a D2 elementum and it never rusted and I was hard on the thing. I love the micarta look so I’ve very tempted to grab the cruwear one

Test / drag the side in question very lightly against a paper towel to see if anything catches or just give it a few high angle (25 ish DPS) strokes across a fine stone.

Cruwear is one of the most stainless steels for being a carbon steel, it's quite special. No, I would not worry about spot rusting with Cruwear the way you would with 1095. Recommend it anyways, but doubly so if you want a good carbon steel that isn't spotty.
I have nine PM2s, the Cruwear is my most instinctively grabbed. Love it.

How about the micarta? People complain it feels cheap

I wouldn't say that it feels cheap, it feels a little fluffy in the very beginning (my fiance said like the back of a clipboard) but use will solve that, your hand oils make the micarta "set" more, will give it color and character, or you can oil it.

Here is close to what it looks like out of the box, with nothing added, just hand oils and nature coloring it, next to a Shaman in green micarta for example:

This time, I put mineral oil on the scale:20230101_122828.jpg
From the jump though, they are of different textures, the PM2 is a fluffier, sanded sort of micarta, whereas I think the Shaman is contoured/bead blasted.

Still like it a lot, still very grippy! And the little tab issue is a non-issue.

I used Mink oil, made it darker , more grip and got rid of the dry look

Thanks for the input. I’ll definitely think it over this weekend
