My wife got me one of these for my birthday. It rocks! It's about twice as wide as the sharpmaker rods but much easier to carry than the SM. It seems to cut faster than the sharpmaker on strait edges. I don't think it would work well on a recurve edge and there is no provision for serrated edges.
The stones are very thin by themselves, but glued together they feel quite robust. It came with a very thick cowhide sheath tooled with the Spyderco logo.
I highly recommend the DS for on the go sharpening. It puts the great Spydie ceramic abrasives in a package you can take anywhere.

I had considered getting one to take with me when I go camping. How do you think it would do on a full size trail knife?

I believe it would work well if you watch your fingers. That's a concern sharpening any knife I suppose. You might also try a DMT diafold/EZLAP folding hone. It has a handle so your fingers are out of the way. It would also cut faster for removing nicks. I have a DMT I carry with my H.I. Khukuri.
