I'm considering getting a Double Stuff pocket stone as it is easier to take on holiday for minor touch ups than my Sharpmaker but I have noticed there seems to be 3 different colours of pouch available. A dark brown (my preference), a mid brown (not adverse) and a creamy sort of colour (not really for me). Does the difference in colour indicate the date of production? I have no doubt that any of them will last ten times longer than I will but was just wondering if they are all the same product or if its one of those "the older ones/newer ones are better" situations.
Any info on this or even just general opinions on the Double Stuff is much appreciated. :)

I just got a second one straight from Spyderco and the pouch was in a darker brown suede leather. The older one I have was creamy, but has darkened with age (there is also thicker leather in the old pouch)

Great sharpener btw, use mine for most sharpening needs when not at home.

I carry a Doublestuff Spyderco dual grit stone with me almost daily. It comes in extremely handy at times and I find it to be quite handy for all kinds of sharpening jobs. I wish that they would bring back the old Spyderco 702 stones which were a shorter version of the great 701 Profile stones which I think is Spyderco's best overall manual sharpening tool.

I have a Double stuff too and havent used it much but I also picked up some scrap leather from a leather store and cut it to fit into the Double Stuff pouch so I have a strop!

I heard about the 702's. They are half the length of the 701's. That would be a very nice set to have. I too with they would bring back both profile sets! :D

If they would just take the 303 Doublestuff stone and modify it to make it sort of like the 701 Profile they would sell a ton of them. All they would have to do would be to add the 2 radii ends just like the ones that are on the original 701 Profiles. That would be a super survival type sharpener. Being they are not going to discontinue the Doublestuff anytime soon ( at least I'm assuming they aren't) then to me it makes perfect sense to modify and improve it to where you can sharpen serrations.

Spyderco brought serrations and particularly their own Spyderedge pattern to the forefront of the knife industry so it just makes perfect sense to have a sharpener that can accomodate it. Even if they come through with the smaller version of the 204 Sharpmaker as they have discussed in the past.

I still say if they had made a base unit similar to the one that is used on the 204 Sharpmaker to where you could insert the 701 Profiles in a slot and have them stationary at a present angle just like they do on the 204 Sharpmaker>> had they done that I doubt if sales would have ever fallen on the 701 Profiles.

Even if they were to bring back the smaller 702 Profiles ( half the length of the 701) that would also make for a great survival/outdoor sharpener.

Very sorry for the late reply, I have had a lot of family stuff on my plate recently and haven't had a chance to say thanks for the comments. So I'm guessing the different coloured leather is just that then and that it's the same product/quality whatever the colour.
The 702's look ideal, I do hope they bring them back or as you say JD, do a little tweaking on the Doublestuff. Much as I like the look of the Doublestuff I hadn't considered serrations and didn't even know they used to make the 702's. This is probably a very stupid question but is it possible to use the edges of the Doublestuff to sharpen serrations like you would use the edges of the triangular Sharpmaker rods? I only have a couple of serrated Spydies right now but I am getting a serrated H1 Dragonfly 2 so I spose it makes more sense to get a portable stone that accommodates them as well. I have relatives in Cape Cod and am heading there next week for a wedding, the Dragonfly should be there when I get there to keep a smile on my face for pictures. Apparently I can look a little moody if I have to leave all my toys at home, lol. I have a wry grin this second as I just remembered I got the father-in-law a Sharpmaker for Christmas a couple of years back! :-)

No Buddah I wouldn't use the Doublestuff stone to sharpen serrations. It's just not made for that type of sharpening chore. But on the other hand I'm not big on using the 204 Sharpmaker for sharpening serrations either. I've just had my very best luck using the 701 Profile kit on several different serration patterns ( especially the Spyderedge of Spyderco blades) and I've come to the conclusion it's the best tool out there for the job. Now my jury is still out on the Goldenstone but I will admit that I've gotten some good results lately using the discontinued Duckfoot unit.

The problem I have with using any kind of "cornered" type stone on serrations is that they tend to deform them from what they originally were from the factory.

I use my Doublestuff stone strictly for plain edged blades. And for touch up in the field it works great.
