Double washers on Mini Strider?

What is the purpose of the 2 (instead of 1) washers used on the thumbstud side of spear point the Mini Strider? I noticed that this positions the length of the blade with different spacing to their respective liners while in its folded position. In fact, the blade is so close to the locking liner side that part of it rubs that liner. This is shown in the wear marks on the blade near its grind line.

Nakano,
I know the engineers made the switch to double washers a little while back. The issue with your blade rubbing the side in another thing altogether. It should not do that, period. If you send it in, we will fix the problem under warrantee. Email me if you need an address.
Take care,

Thank you Joe. The blades rubbing is more so near the area where it runs parallel with the finger groove of the liner. I think this to be a natural tendency since the liner is not perfectly in plane. I do not feel this is too big of an issue since I will be using this mini Strider on a regular bases.

I am still curious as to the purpose of the double liners. Of the 2, the 1 that lies against the corresponding liner, is shaped rather a bit oddly. Its exposed surface is rectangularly shaped. Any clue here?

Oh, BTW I just received it back from warrantee due to faulty lockup and free spinning thumb stud! Seems good to go now.

I' ll take a guess here. That double liner is probably there to prevent the locking liner from "overriding" the blades tang and getting wedged between the opposite liner. Seems right since prior to sending mine back, the liner lock was way over near the top of the blades tang!

Nakano,

That would've been my guess, too (to prevent overtravel). Curious that no one else uses that technique... sounds like an excellent idea.

Once mine came back from the shop, it had single washers on both sides; the irregular/square-ish one is still there, but the extra one is gone.

It has a tiny bit of blade wobble with that one missing (where it was rock solid before), so maybe it has to do with balancing tension versus fit on the blade pivot screw?

(note: I don't mind exchanging wobble for a better lockup... see the followup post.)

Hello Biogon. I recently read and replied to your ongoing thread "Liner engagement..." A short while ago, I checked on my Mini after a week or so of regular/ hard use. It now has the SAME sypmtoms yours originally had! The engagement is 2/3 high, and there is additionally blade play towards liner and stop pin. The tell tale marks on its blade tang where the liner engages looks the same as yours did! I just received this mini back from warranty a week or so ago where there was originally plenty of blade play as described above. And liner engaged way high, pass 2/3! I have already reground the edges bevels to 20% each side on a Spyderco Sharpmaker with the diamond sleeves. Lots of work here! But with a greatly improved edge IMO. But now I am quite a bit disappointed.

Joe Houser: should I send this mini back to you for your caretaking? I really, really hate to have to send any knife back a second time for the same problem. Time plus packaging plus postage and the wait...:( :( :(

Nakano2,

Well, I sent it in because I was worried about the "liner sliding" symptom.

Mr. Houser (and the entire Buck service team) have said that lockup that occurs at the middle to the opposing liner is "standard" and is the way they prefer to do it. They said that an engagement close to the near tang is NOT to spec, but that they would work it to my liking (very admirable!)

Mr. Houser immediately asked me to send it back, where he (or his team) was able to find parts and tweak the fit such that it did lock up at the near side of the tang.

If you feel that you'd like this addressed also, I'm sure that he'd be happy to help you out. He's been tremendously helpful to me.

Keep us updated,

-Jon
