Doubts if my new Umnumzaan is new

Last week after saving up i finally managed to get my hands on a brand new Umnumzaan from an online reseller in US( I am from India). Was a little surprised that the the birth date on the card said january 2011 . I was under the impression that with the kind of of demand nobody would have that old stock. Though the knife was scratch-less but on the blade where the ceramic ball locks showed some wear. The knife locks at bout 55 to 60 %. Since saving that kinda dollars in India is a super luxury was very disappointed. Just want to check up if a new Umnumzaan locks at more then 50% or less

January 2011 is not that far back to have stock. It's not unheard of for someone to receive a new CRK that goes back a couple of years or more from a store.

As to the wear from the ceramic ball I think it is normal. At the shop they will open and close a knife and the ceramic being harder then the steel will immediately make some mark on the blade tang and on the face of the lock.

The lockup is also normal. CRK has stated repeatedly that the normal lockup on the ball of the umnumzaan will be somewhere at the 60-70% mark. You should be fine. You will see some initial wear and then it should settle and stay there for a very long time.

Your Umnumzaan is fine. I've had mine for almost a year, and the lock hasn't changed from the 50% it started at. Your knife is perfectly within specs.

rahulb, don't worry! I was looking a some brand new Sebenzas and Umnis at a dealer. I called him up to find out about the blade steel. I wanted a micarts inlay Sebenaza. He told me he didn't even know he had any left in stock but he had 2 of the Sebs and 1 Umni.

He told me the mfg. date was January 2011. This is a good & trusted vendor. I didn't buy because I want the steel upgrade, especially with the price increase. I'd wager that your Umnazaan is exactly like everyone has mentioned - "new" and just shows the wear mark from the ceramic ball (which will show up very quickly) since ceramic hones steel. Enjoy your new CRK and post some pictures for us man!

Yup I just picked up a new large Classic from an online vendor, born in '04 :D

I bought a small Classic Sebenza brand new at a retailer this year. So yeah, it can happen. :)

That's within spec, but not by much. Lockup on the Umnumzaan's should be further in then the Sebenzas. I think around 75% was the stated number. If the lock is solid I wouldn't worry about it though.

I think it's fine. Hope this helps:

Just to echo what has been said already......The knives from CRK are fitted and checked by hand in the factory, this involves opening and closing the knife to make sure everything is seated and working as it should. This will of course show some marks on the contact point of the blade but is absolutely normal. As other have stated already a lock up of 50%-75% is where CRK aim for so again that is totally normal. Enjoy the knife and the many years of cutting pleasure it will bring. :)

thanks a lot guys . that was very reassuring and has put my mind at peace. thanks fferrell for the pics my lock up is almost similar . I got the wrong info that the lock up should be less then 50% and plus the birth date got me thinking....anyways its the beautiful blade i have held in my hands . just cant stop myself from taking it out from my pocket and admiring every now and then. I got myself a nice calfskin pouch to keep it nice and cozy. will post some pics very soon

The "lookies" happens to us all mate :p It's good to hear that you have been set at ease.

If it makes you feel any better, I bought a small regular from 1SKS last fall that was born in 2004. :)

IMO, people around here worry way too much about where the lockup on framelock knives are. As long as its less than maybe 90%, and more than maybe 15-20%, youre good. Most of the time, each frame lock is hand-fitted to the blade. Since this is done by hand, there is a margin of difference from knife to knife. For example, it would be silly to compare where your lockup is on your XYZ knife to where your friends lockup is on his XYZ knife.

And a certificate date of only 8 months ago isnt bad for a new knife.

My Umnumzaan is sitting right on 85-90% since it got back from CRK a couple of years ago. Hasn't moved an inch and is solid. I'm never concerned about lock travel on CRK's unless it's too early (10%-ish).

I agree. People overhype how far exactly the lock bar must be. There is no perfect percentage, really. It can vary. As long as its not WAYY early like you said, or all the way on the other side touching the opposite slab. anywhere in between is just fine. Ive had early ones at about 15-20%, and late ones at like 80+%. They're all rock solid. IMO, people need to let that topic just die :D
