Dovo - the german SAK...

Hi guys!

I don´t really know if this traditional enough, but I think it is.

I got a package some time ago from a german dealer, I bought several knives. Two of them were very interessting. One is Ludwig Groten, but that´s another story... the other one is DOVO, Solingen which I want to show now. These knives look similar to the ordinary SAK and are like an ordinary SAK. But on the DOVO´s there´s a little that makes it pretty traditional. DOVO made pocket knives only from 1923 - 1973. Nowadays there are still razorblades around, I believe they are still made by them.

I took and Vic Spartan to compare... because they have similar setup of tools - but finally a little different in the look, but that´s it. (The Spartan is the black one, for seing it better)

DOVO Tangstamp - it says DOVO, Solingen, Germany, Rostfrei, Stainless

Knife and tools opened (except corkscrew and awl which are pretty similar to each other)

The thickness of these knives is just the same

On these knives there are no tweezers and no toothpick.
They are pretty similar to SAKs and the one I got is barely new, means unused. I asked the woman that runs this shop, she told me, they got a very amount of these DOVO from another big retailer and they are all made in the 1970s.
I think that´s a nice alternatice to the ordinary Vic or Wenger, and pretty traditinal, too ;)

Comments are welcome! :)

Very interesting Andi. I have a Dovo straight razor, and didn't know they'd made knives in the past :)

thats cool, and if the knives are half the quality their straight razors are, then that must be a fine piece!

Well, I don´t know about their razors, but the quality is similar to an SAK, the spring is even stronger than on an ordinary SAK Spartan. Makes a better feel while using.

Jack - I don´t have any of theirs razors, I use the disposable ones ;) but these SAK-like style of knife has a great quality and I´m looking forward seeing how it works at sharping that mystery steel ...

Rolf - I like to create such threads and the following discussions :)

I don´t know if these knives are available (maybe on the 2nd market) in the US, but that would be interessting for trying.

BTW: I forgot to add; Dovo made pocket knives formaly. There were many other patterns available like penknives and jackknives, mostly with wood handles. The blades were of carbon steel (this one shown above is stainless) and some fixed blades. They were also known as DOVO - Teufelskerle ... maybe this helps for searching on these knives, if interessted

Andi,
thanks for showing this. I had no idea that Dovo produced such knives. Nice comparison, and great review.
As a sidenote: since you're a blade enthusiast, and even more singe you're German, you should quit shaving with disposable cartridges and get to something more serious. Straight razors might be a longer shot, but DE shaving is awesome...and you should be able to find some Merkur up there

Fausto -thanks for the kind words

100 % agreed about shaving; I think I really should get a real razor and a lot of tape to fix my face ;) Merkur are still available I think whenever they are not made at this time.

BTW: didn´t you get my PM?

Plenty of Merkur DE's and Dovo straights available in Leeds Andi ;)

Very interesting Andi. It looks nice, I like the longer nail nick and slight difference in main blade shape.

What are those scales made out of?

I have seen Dovo's straight razors, they are rather nice. Personally I use a straight edge shavette (disposable blades) but I'd like to upgrade some day.

The Merkur DE carbon steel blades are super sharp. I bought my bro some last year for his vintage safety razor. They shave very well.

Andi,
I did get your pm, and replied via email. Thank you so much.
As for DE shaving, you won't need that much tape for your face. You can enjoy a better shave, and even save money for new knives :D
Merkur safety razors are still in production, and actually Dovo owns the factory and brand :)

I had no idea that DOVO made knives like this. Until now I have only seen the straight razors. Looks like a good one.
