hi everyone. My name is Jeff. I’ve had an account here for a while but this is my first time posting. I hope this is the appropriate area to do this, please let me know if it is not.
I’ll get right to it...I’m temporarily in a wheelchair and unable to work for a bit due to some recent complications with my type 1 diabetes. It is my second time out of work in the last year and a half due to health issues, and I want to do it better this time. Last time was rough...I didn’t keep myself busy enough and depression set in. It was mild, but got me in a bad cycle of feeling guilty for not taking advantage of the time I had while out of work. The guilt caused even more inactivity, which lead to more guilt, which caused less activity, and so on and so forth. I hated it, but had a hard time breaking the cycle.
So this time around, I’m making sure I stay busy by working on small projects that don't get much attention while I’m at my full time job, one of which being a knife blank I’ve had for a while. While full on custom knife making is very interesting and appealing to me, I have only ever endeavored into making knife handles for blade blanks so far. I buy knife blanks and make, glue, pin, shape, etc the scales. I’ve gone a bit further with this one and have been able to change some things on it like reshape the tang, drill larger holes for the pins (going to use flared tube), and a friend was kind enough to help me add a nice fuller with his mill. However, I do not have the tools to grind and finish blades, nor do I have the experience. I’d love to get there someday, but time, money, and other projects just don’t allow at this point.
Because of that, I found myself in a pickle when I was reworking the tang on this knife. I was working hastily and accidentally dropped the knife point first on the garage floor and chipped the point! Dummy, I know.
The tip now needs to be reshaped and finished before I can continue with it, so my question is this...is there anyone here with experience that would be willing to help a guy out? I would gladly pay someone to fix my knife so I could keep moving on this thing! I am willing to ship it, but am in southeast PA if there are any local members that could lend a hand.
Here’s a pic of the knife and closeup of the damage...
I didn’t know if all the different angles of it being a tanto would make it more difficult to reshape, so I photoshopped an idea I had to make it more of a standard, curved blade, too. I actually quite prefer the look of this option as I made the spine parallel with the sharpened edge. I never really cared for how it got wider as it got back towards the tang...
So again, if there is anyone that could help me with this, especially the curved edge option, I would be very appreciative and excited to speak further.
If you’ve made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read!
