Down on my luck, looking for help

hi everyone. My name is Jeff. I’ve had an account here for a while but this is my first time posting. I hope this is the appropriate area to do this, please let me know if it is not.

I’ll get right to it...I’m temporarily in a wheelchair and unable to work for a bit due to some recent complications with my type 1 diabetes. It is my second time out of work in the last year and a half due to health issues, and I want to do it better this time. Last time was rough...I didn’t keep myself busy enough and depression set in. It was mild, but got me in a bad cycle of feeling guilty for not taking advantage of the time I had while out of work. The guilt caused even more inactivity, which lead to more guilt, which caused less activity, and so on and so forth. I hated it, but had a hard time breaking the cycle.

So this time around, I’m making sure I stay busy by working on small projects that don't get much attention while I’m at my full time job, one of which being a knife blank I’ve had for a while. While full on custom knife making is very interesting and appealing to me, I have only ever endeavored into making knife handles for blade blanks so far. I buy knife blanks and make, glue, pin, shape, etc the scales. I’ve gone a bit further with this one and have been able to change some things on it like reshape the tang, drill larger holes for the pins (going to use flared tube), and a friend was kind enough to help me add a nice fuller with his mill. However, I do not have the tools to grind and finish blades, nor do I have the experience. I’d love to get there someday, but time, money, and other projects just don’t allow at this point.

Because of that, I found myself in a pickle when I was reworking the tang on this knife. I was working hastily and accidentally dropped the knife point first on the garage floor and chipped the point! Dummy, I know.

The tip now needs to be reshaped and finished before I can continue with it, so my question is this...is there anyone here with experience that would be willing to help a guy out? I would gladly pay someone to fix my knife so I could keep moving on this thing! I am willing to ship it, but am in southeast PA if there are any local members that could lend a hand.

Here’s a pic of the knife and closeup of the damage...

I didn’t know if all the different angles of it being a tanto would make it more difficult to reshape, so I photoshopped an idea I had to make it more of a standard, curved blade, too. I actually quite prefer the look of this option as I made the spine parallel with the sharpened edge. I never really cared for how it got wider as it got back towards the tang...

So again, if there is anyone that could help me with this, especially the curved edge option, I would be very appreciative and excited to speak further.

If you’ve made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read!

I think someone with a Work Sharp they don’t want could open up a whole new world for you. You can find the KO Edition for about $115 and a knife grinding addition for another $75. Not a bad investment if it keeps you busy!!

Well, Jeff. I have an angle grinder and some experience with stock removal. I'm about half an hour from Hershey, and I could take a swing at it.

I don't think this is the right place to discuss it, though.

My email is Coffreek@gmail.com, which I am posting openly because everybody here is solid (and I have an excellent spam filter).

Drop me a line, I'll see what I can do for you.

I’ve never heard of this, I will definitely look into it!

Hey, thanks so much for the response! I actually would not have a problem getting the overall shape done on my own with an angle grinder, it’s more the beveled grinds that I have never done before and don’t have the tools to do. I appreciate the offer, though!!

Worksharp and an angle grinder pretty much represent the two schools of stock removal. The Worksharp is essentially a tiny belt grinder, and an excellent starter if your preferred method is to move the work, and keep the tool stationary.

I would rather clamp the work and move the tool. Completely personal choice, and neither one is objectively better.

If an angle grinder is your choice, the local Harbor Freight is the place to start. Or, the South American River website.

Edit: an angle grinder with an 80 grit metal removal flap wheel will allow you to grind in your bevels. I don't know if it's faster than the Worksharp, but I like it because I can see what I'm doing.

I unfortunately have no experience with metalwork, and am also not anywhere near PA.

However, and unfortunately, I know the exact position you are in. I spent most of 2018 and part of 19 in the hospital, and/or in a wheelchair. I'm also type 1 diabetic. If you ever need someone to talk to who understands, email me at bernard@bepinsurance.com.

I've only been diabetic six years, but as many of the wonderful people here know, I have been through some serious medical issues.

I haven't been able to work for 3 1/2 years,F which at age 40, eats at me. Fiddling with knives, guns, etc has helped keep me going. Though I walk unassisted, I only have two speeds: Turtle and sloth.

Best of luck with the knife, I wish I knew the first thing about metal work.

Did u ever get it fixed? If not I could probably help. I’ve got a 2x72 grinder.
Hi, thanks so much for asking! I had been in contact with someone who was going to help out, but after exchanging a few emails, I have not heard from them again in about two weeks. So if you are willing to help, I’d love to speak with you more about it! I’ll send a personal message on your profile with my email address if that’s ok. Thanks again!
