as it gets warmer i'm starting to wear more shorts and less jeans, and im considering lightening the load. for a couple years now my EDC has amounted to a tank folder (usually some sort of ZT), an Izula II and of course the Alox Farmer. looking thru my collection yesterday I realized I could lighten this up a bit by switching to a FRN Spyderco or AL Mar Eagle HD, a Candiru sporting Godspeed kydex dropped in my back pocket and I COULD switch to a SAK Bantam because it has the two tools I use the most...a small blade and a bottle opener. does anyone else do this or am I just overthinking it?:D

It is all about personal preference. If you feel you can downsize and be content, I guess my question is why you carry the larger heavier knives in the first place? Does your use justify the added bulk when you wear jeans? Having choices is good.

I like big guns and knives. During the winter, I enjoy a 1911 and Benchmade Bone Collector 15020. Then Summer hits, living in AZ in a desert will make you reconsider what you are carrying. Switched to the Taurus pt145 and Spyderco Endura and a world of difference.

I find that the majority of my knife use can be distilled down to one SAK if I am honest with myself. But I like to carry other knives too because I like knives. My Cold Steel Tuff Lite has seen an amazing amount of use considering it is my second knife. I would be comfortable with just this one knife if it came down to it because I have started to carry a Vic multi-tool on my belt and find the added convenience nice.

I wont say daily usage necessarily justifies carrying the heavier knives, but Im one that likes a stout knife in my pockets and blue jeans just seem to keep everything in order and safe.... which isn't the case with loose pocket having shorts. i carry alotta "junk" aside from knives in my pockets on a daily basis already, and this is stuff that cant be left behind.

Sounds like you're itching for a new knife. No need to justify it to anyone. If you want to try out something lighter, a Spyderco frn or griptillian are both good choices.

honestly im not...i already have the knives id need to cut the weight back. i was just curious if im the only one who's considered/done this. ive carried a handgun for many years now and would never consider "downsizing"... same revolver no matter the season.

For shorts, I carry one of my lighter fixed blades. I have two that are 1/16ths thick with kydex sheaths and they're great for summer. I still have to wear pants during the week though so its not a huge deal when I have to switch it up.

I like stout knives too. I could easily carry a small SAK, but I choose to carry a 111mm one. But I carried an Endura for a while and got "looks" and moved back to a Delica that works perfectly fine for me and fits my pockets easier. One of my EDC's is a GEC #42 which is pretty stout and a pocket full. I tend to slip it into a leg pocket on my cargo pants. Variety makes life interesting.

I intend to carry either the Cold Steel Tuff Lite or the Delica this summer when I wear shorts and have fewer pockets.

I'm afraid I can't be of much help here, as I upsize my EDC for warmer weather. When the weather's good I EDC my BK9. When it's time to break out the winter coat I started out carrying my BK17 with Leatherman Rebar in the pouch. Come this year's winter it's going to be the BK10 in the same configuration.

Makes no difference to me, usually my shorts have more pockets allowing me to carry more gear. Weight has never been an issue

I have downsized year round for a while now. Try to keep both sides even, one folder right side one flashlight left side.
Downsized my CCW too(shield 9mm) gotta say I love the lighter weight EDC.

I do this with guns, usually a G32 in the colder months and then an LC9 or LCP in the summer. The slimmer profile of the Ruger helps fit under light shirts and since I carry IWB in the summer it also helps if I have done some uhh expanding over the winter...

Totally, i've been thinking about this alot lately. I carry a Sebenza/Umnum, or a Shiro, or something in the 3.5 to 4 inch 5oz range for 8-9 months of the year, when I start wearing shorts my carry method changes as nothing I own clips in comfortably. I can't stand carrying a knife unclipped deep pocket when wearing jeans, but it seems like my shorts favour this type of carry. I am on the hunt for a dedicated shorts blade 3.5oz, 3 inch blade, 3.75-4 inch closed. I have had my eye on a few,....... Curtis F3 compact, Voorhies model 13, and a Folts little SOB flipper.

Suggestions????
Thanks,
Otts

I would be buying different shorts to accomadate my choice of steel.

I'd also be buying different shorts. I don't believe any of my shorts are pocketless. Having no pockets is sort of foreign to me and would make my life uncomfortable. Even my jami bottems have pockets and I usually have a knife in a pocket if I am lounging around.

Yeah maybe its time for some new shorts, just too bad cause I have 5 of the exact same pair just different colours. The pockets in them are quite big, and the corners are quite low, with a generous material fold that is too thick for most of my clips. I have deep carried my mini barrage in those shorts, the size and weight seemed to be quite comfortable so i've kept my eyes open for something similar. Just thinking about having a few to choose from depending on the day!!

I don't change my EDC seasonally. Same Glock 19 Gen 4 in the same holster all year, and I'll still carry my Manix 2 G-10. This carries easy in tshirt + shorts weather.

I keep it all compact year around - no changes required. Glock 26 in cargo pocket of my pants or shorts and a simple slip-joint pocket knife in RFP. :)
