Hello,
I am considering one of these two fine Dozier knives... Dozier's Arkansas Toothpick or the A.G. Russell's New York Special. I know the actual blade itself is identical, however the handles are markedly different. I am sure that someone here has faced this choice and made a decision... any advice for me? I will use it as a EDC. And no, buying both is not an option...!
Thank you.

Vast majority buy the Arkansas toothpick over the NY Special. A.G. Russell's is the only place I have ever even seen the New York Special which may have something to do with it. I do not think the over shoulder type covert sheath that comes with the NY Special would be very useful to most people. Be careful not to pry much of anything with it. That tip is unreal sharp and thin in profile. While very strong compared to say a Spyderco Endura or Police tip, it would still snap fairly easy. Great little knife. I have the toopick and like it a lot. The ease with which it penatrates things is unreal so be careful.

Thought I'd bring this thread back from the dead. I'm trying to decide too. I have pretty smalish hands, so I'm thinking the New York might work best. With the AG discount for Paramedics they will probably be the best deal for me. Just have to decide between the two knives. I'd be wearing it IWB, BTW.

Handled both and bought the Toothpick. Even with my small hands, the NY Special was just too small.

The dual grind and thicker blade stock indicates some specific purposes for these 2 models. They are definitely thrusters and could be life savers if one is caught in a pinch. The NY Special is made for AG Russell exclusively and is not offered directly from the Dozier shop. This model was originally made by RW Loveless and was based on his Riverside Hideout model, which had a slightly longer blade length. The chest rig (not actually a shoulder rig) works quite well. It is simple and functional. The only change I would recommend are a set of pull the dot snaps for attaching to the belt rather than the use of the current loop thru types where it is required to remove the belt. The nylon straps can be removed and the sheath can be used as a near horizontal belt carry position. The small pinky hook and larger single finger groove allows for a quick draw and then allows for the hand to lock into place into the hammer grip position. IME, it works well for hands on the medium to smaller size.

The Arkansas Toothpick has a round butt profile and is slightly longer overall. It will work better for those with larger hands.

D2 at 60- 61 Rockwell makes for a very hard blade. The Dozier shop has this formula down to the proverbial "T". And I have not experienced nor heard of any reports that they were found brittle. Does that mean its blades will not snap if levered or pryed against another object? I suppose if one tried hard enough, ANY blade will snap.

There was a Bullpup model at the Dozier table this past weekend at the ECCK show. It is a beefier, stouter and slightly shorter version of the NY Special- clip point blade shape, fully tapered tang, red fiber liners, grooved thumb rest, and green canvas micarta.

Acoldspoon, congrats on your new purchase. Keep it close.

Nakano, I'm taking the plunge on a mini Freedom Fighter to sorta go along with my Dozier Workhorse. Whats your general opinion on the mini?

Actually, even "minier" at 3.75" blade. I picked up the bottom one; black micarta handles with stainless pins. The top model has green micarta with brass pins.

Just picked up a dozier toothpick,

This is one knife that I can`t stop fondling.
The attention to detail, yet still simplistic design is incredible.

A real workhorse.

Supermans beltbuckle is probably made with D2

I have no experience with the Ny but can highly recommend the toothpick,

Good luck on your decision
