I am looking at a Dozier KS-3 Professional Guide's Knife to purchase. I was wandering the blade is D2 with Rockwell hardness of 61+.. Now, that is pretty high. Used Paul Bos HT knives 60 which always had a hard time sharpening them. Usually they don't loose edge in a year but wandering once they do, can it be sharpened on Kings Japanese made waterstone at 1000 and 6000 grit. I am very good at Waterstone but wandering if dozier can be sharpened on those. Hate using Diamond stones and other stuff. Let me know guys who used Dozier. :)

Hi,

Lots of Doziers in D2 here. ;)

Also, own a few other makers w/ Bos heat treat.

Doziers are a bit harder imo,... just flick the blade w/ your for finger and they sound different in pitch.

Yes, it can be down with water stones but really save yourself some trouble, fatigue, and frustration on the good high heat treated D2, S30V, etc, steels.... use DIAMONDS.

When you get it clean up the factory grind with the 1k then polish with 6k, use the 6k whenever the edge does not cleanly shave hair and sharpening will be the least of your worries.

If you want to change profile or remove large edge damage then a diamond stone would be best.

If dull, I think you will wear a curve into your stones before you can get a good edge on that knife. Then again, if all you need to do is to "touch up" the edge, I think it will work fine.

Thanks knifenut1013. Your method sounds practical. I just hate those diamond hones as no smooth surface.

I use ceramic rods and paper wheels for my Doziers..

If you must do it by hand ceramic rods and a strop works wonderful..I don't find Doziers hard to sharpen..they hold a wonderful edge and sharpening is a breeze..

You are very right. My highly recommended not to use waterstone on Dozier as the hollow grind is very high hollow grind which is very hard to sharpen on a whetstone. I almost ruined the edge. I had to use spyderco sharpmaker to restore it. After that, Leather strop to give the blade a mirror edge. Now, Dozier keeps the knife a rough finish that is the main possible cause for blades to have rust in humid places. I used 600, 1000 and finally 2000 to smooth the entire blade and green compound polishing to have that soft smooth feel. My other D2 never rusted like from Benchmade especially one with stone washed.
So, never sharpen a Dozier or any other blade with high Hollow grind on a benchstone. Use light touch up on sharpmaker. Spyderco ceramics can eat away the Dr edge easily so be gentle.
