Dozier Knives (maker)?

Just ordered a Buffalo River Hunter from A.G. Russell with a hollow ground D2 bladed. This knife was in stock, so I didn't have the 3 to 4 month wait if it was wasn't. I called to confirm my order and they said after I asked if Bob actually made this knife. They looked into it and said Daniel Dozer did. The A.G. Russel rep said knives made by Bob cost close to a grand now. I looked on the site and see Dan Crotts is also a maker. I always assumed that Bob did the finishing grinds on all his knives. My question is when did this transition happen and is the quality still there. Can't really complain at the price point, but I wanted a Bob Dozier knife. I haven't read into their operation to much, but got the impression the hollow ground blades were made by Bob. I still placed the order

Just got a call back from A.G. Russell and they were mistaken. Dan Crotts, which is Bobs nephew now does the work for Bob. It seems that Bob just does the higher end, show piece knives, not the affordable user knives from what I see available on their site. The sales rep offered me some knives that Bob made and like she said, they were close to a grand and used different steels with a polished finish. I have yet to see a Dozier knife for sale that mentions its actually made by Dan Crotts. A little misleading, Bob seems to like him, so I guess he must know what he's doing....I hope

A.G Russell was great to deal with :thumbsup:

Oh you would be pissed if buying a Loveless when Bob was alive to find that Jim made it :) In many shops the maker does not make the knife, they might over see it and check quality control but they are to overwhelmed to make all the knives by themselves

I just figured he did the finish grinding, or sharpened them. I never saw any mention of other makers when looking into his knives. Way out of the Dozier loop...but will soon have a great looking Dozier blade made by Dan!

Dan Crotts is Bobs stepson. Crotts is the dozier shop manager and also makes his own knives (Crotts cutlery). While possible, I doubt if even Dan made your knife. I believe I read that the only two to heatreat are Dan and Bob - but I believe he has several "grinders" working at the shop.

In my experience a Crotts knife will be finished to a higher level than a regular dozier these days. Not to say the dozier isn't nice, I think they are a bargain for the dollars.

A.G. said it was Dan Cotts.....I just don't know, its a user. Its considered a hand made knife, it would be nice to know for sure who made it when people ask

So are Dozers still hand made.....Or are blanks sent out to China and then finished up by....maybe the new guy that just started at Dozier's shop? Are you also saying that some knives might not have the legendary heat treatment?

It will have Bobs legendary heat-treat forsure. I believe Dan is the only other person that Bob has taught his "magic" to. And I believe all dozier knives are heat treated by Bob himself or Dan.

Will it be hand made?
Now here is where it gets a little more confusing.
If the etched logo is:

Arkansas
Made
Dozier

It's all handmade in the dozier shop. However some doziers sold by AG Russell were machine ground, then heat treated and handled in the dozier shop. I believe these were all flat ground and were marked:

Dozier
Arkansas
Knives

Now, after all this I need to be clear - I'm not a Dozier expert. I was on a Dozier kick a few years back and this info is only how I remember things. I certainly could be wrong.

If you go to doziers website, that's Dan in the videos teaching you how to sharpen etc. As I mentioned he also has his own knife company and his attention to detail is very high. His knives are near perfect - so if Dan ground your dozier or even just heat treated it, you have absolutely nothing yo worry about.

The Dozier shop is the business founded by Bob Dozier.
They are nice folks and very upfront about their business.
You have nothing to worry about with a knife with the Dozier logo on it.
I enjoy each and every one of mine

I read that about the hollow ground blades somewhere. It was a post from 2009 I believe. This is why I asked if my blade was a hollow grind. They said yes, so I said i'll take it. Thanks for all the input guys!
