jvan---I know Dozier has a few guys with him at the shop. Give him a call. His knives are excellent. I know Gene Ingram is a one man show. Gene uses D2 and the style of knives he makes are similar to Dozier. Have fun.
Dozier made knives are all hand made in the Dozier shop. Maker Dan Crotts has been at the helm and making knives for many years now. Bob has been concentrating his efforts in the folder shop, where at current there are no longer any orders being taken. AG Russell has been selling Dozier mades for many years now. Some models, including the perennial New York Special and more recently the Loveless style Classic Drop Point Hunter is exclusive to AG. Due to continuing demand for his strait knives, Bob and AG agreed to have some of the strait knives work outsourced. This included blanking the blades and preshaping. The grinding, heat treat, handle attachment and shaping, final edge, overall finish and kydex sheathing were all done in shop. 2 identifying characteristics are that they were all done with a flat grind and had "Arkansas Dozier Knives" etching rather than the usual "Arkansas Dozier Made" etching. This is about as "factory" (as per jvans inquiry) as it got. The time and cost saved wasn' t all that much. Currently, Dozier made knives sold thru AG Russell all come from the Dozier shop. Hope this helps a bit.
I (unfortunately) only have one Dozier. But after a few years use, I am pretty much convinced that I could find a few other knives just as good as a Dozier, but it would be virtually impossible to find one better.
And for the same price as a high end mass production knife!
Thanks Nakano.
BTW if you want to know anything about Mr. Dozier's knives- ask Nakano.
Go to a NYCCKS show- you'll see him behind the table. Any questions you may have- he'll set you right. When I first started messing w/ knives seriously in the 90's, Kin (Nakano) was one of the first guys I met. I have nothing but the highest regard for his taste and experience. I've owned a number of knives that seriously impressed me in terms of sharpness and toughness/edge retention- Doziers occupy a seat in the Pantheon of form/function/toughness. Spend a few bucks and elevate your knife owning experience. If Bob Dozier's name is on it- it's a fine knife. Full Stop.
