Hi. I'm thinking about buying one of these. Anyone own one? I haven't actually handeled anything of Dozier's before. I'm also curious as to how the sheath system actually works out during daily carry. Is it comfortable, easily acessed, is the knife held securely in the rig, etc. I chose this knife as I am looking for a concealed daily carry fixed blade about the size of the Special(<$200). Open to other suggestions if anyone has found something better. So far the only place I have found where I can get the Special on the Net is A.G. Russel. Anyone know of anywhere else? I like to "shop around" before I buy. Thanks for your time and comments!

Lee-The Dozier I have (Straight Hunter) is top-quality. The kydex sheath holds it very securely. From what I can tell, AG Russell is the only distributer of the NY Special. You may be able to buy one from another forum member-put a post in "knives wanted to buy" section. Also-consider going with the Arkansas Toothpick with the shoulder sheath straight from Bob Dozier. You may save some money as Russell is not known for low prices. But rest assurred whichever Dozier you get, you'll never be dissappointed. He puts out top quality work, fair prices, and I've never, ever heard a bad review about him or his knives here on Bladeforum. Good Luck!

I own a NY Special. The only bad thing I can think of is the sheath design. It only allows for the shoulder system or cross draw carry on a belt. (The clip is permanently attached.) I would like to see thicker kydex used with a multiple carry system that would facilitate strong side and/or behind the hip carry.

If you like this size knife, look into Rob Simonich's Cetan and Newt Livesay's US Marshall also. The NY Special is a little larger than the Cetan and the US Marshall is lager than the Dozier. (4 inch blade.) The sheath design on the NY Special allows for a better grip upon drawing the knife than the Cetan sheath allows. I can see where you would want that on a "defensive" knife.

I own a few Doziers and prefer the near horizontal (crossdraw and strong side abdomen capable) belt sheath. With the appropriate dress code it can be concealed and conveniently and quickly accessed in either standing, sitting or lying down positions! Quick on and off allows for "disposability".

As for the shoulder rig, it is a simple adjustable single piece strap of nylon(?) At one end is a sewn belt loop which starts at the strong side abdomen (between pocket and zipper)and travels strait up over the shoulder and dips down the back to the opposite side and is secured by the other sewn loop. The removable sheath (horizontal belt carry capable) lays on top of the breast area unlike the popular shoulder rig for handguns which lay under the armpit. IME, I don' t recommend this rig for barrel chested individuals. The butt end is often pushed away from the body and sticks out like a sore thumb. The attached belt clip makes it worse. The end loops should have pull the dot snaps for quick on- off capabilities.

As for the NY Special, it is best suited for a smaller hand as the handle is compact. Its blade configuration make sheeple shriek. Any of Bobs tacticals (Agent, Bodyguard) can be made with a shoulder rig and extra sheaths are availble custom fitted to the particular blade.

But all in all, you can' t go wrong with a Dozier. High quality handmades at a reasonable price.
