Dozier Pro Guide -- why not? Anything else?

I used my Entrek Companion last year as my "car camping" knife. It worked, but the sheath is a little cheesy, it's HEAVY as hell, and the bead-blast finish doesn't wipe clean very easily. I'm looking for something else.

I've got my eye on the Dozier Pro Guides knife from A.G. Russell. Any reason NOT to go with one of these? Any better choices out there?

The only reason I can think of NOT to buy a Dozier Pro Guide knife, is if maybe you have really big hands(like me). I just ordered, and should get today or tomorrow, a Dozier Wilderness knife. This is basically the same knife, only with a blade of thicker D2 and has a longer handle. As much as I love my Pro Guide, the Wilderness knife feels even better. Price is about the same too.

Just got my Pro Guide about 2 weeks ago. I don't think there is an out door chore it can't handle. A sharp pry bar it's not, but it's still a pretty hefty knife, with a great blade.

I have med size hands. I can see how someone with smaller hands would not like it. However, if you order directly from Dozier he will make whatever adjustments you need. If you like the handle on the Wilderness, yet the blade on the Pro Guide, just ask Bob to make you a Pro Guide with a Wilderness handle.

I'm thinking of a Dozier as a gift for my father, a couple of quick questions. Was there ever a Pro Guide 1? (is the Pro Guide on dozierknives.com the one you guys are discussing? the KS3 I believe its listed as) And for hunting (pheasant, grouse, whitetail) is there a preferable Dozier?

Regards,

Shaun.

Bob Dozier makes some fine knives suitable for hunting. The slim outdoorsman would make an excellent deer knife, and I believe he is coming out with a bird and trout. Do yourself a favor and visit his site, which also has a small forum. Your questions would be best answered there about specific models. Go to www.dozierknives.com
Good luck, and you are a most excellent son to give a gift like this!

Thanks guys. Mongo, I didn't realize there was a forum on Dozier's site, thanks.

(Didn't mean to hijack the thread, just saw an opportunity)

Regards,

Shaun.

My wife and son (only 7) bought me a Dozier K1 for Christmas. Your father will really be pleased with his gift.

The Dozier Pro Guide is quite simply one of my favorite knives. It just seems to work well in most applications, although I wouldn't choose it for prying or chopping, and it wouldn't be my first choice as a skinner, but it would certainly do the job. It's an all around camp knife with a neat, little sheath that keeps it close to the body, but still within easy reach.

Well, I got my Dozier Wilderness knife yesterday, and I absolutely love it! As much as I love my Pro Guide, this one simply feels better. According to the write up on the Dozier website, supposedly this one is left a little thicker in the edge. Not from what I see. This knife is typical Dozier sharp. It is a little heavier, due to the thicker steel stock, but not bulky or too heavy to carry all day in the woods. The blade shape is great too. It has a decent usable point and a good bit of belly too.

Shaun & Michael,

I would encourage both of you to call the Dozier toll free number and speak with Linda (she is the one that seems to answer the phone everytime I call ;) ).

Tell her what you want and what you are looking for in knife performance and which model you are looking at. She won't steer you wrong.

For an outdoors general use knife, the Pro-Guide is about as small as I want personally. Something in the 4 to 5 inch range seem to suit me best. I don't want a heavy sharpened prybar because I carry a knife to cut things, not jimmy a bank vault door :D

That being said, some people prefer a heavier thicker blade for the limited chopping ability it gives you. I find a lighterweight knife that disappears on my belt is best. If it weighs me down, it is more apt to be in the trunk of the car and not on my belt when I need it. If you're big enough and in good enough condition to carry a Busse or similar knife and have it disappear on your belt, go right ahead, but I live in reality and not some Rambo fantasy world so I carry something more practical for my needs.
