Hello All
I live in British Columbia interior Im a liscenced trapper and have a registered trapline in the province.Every winter for the last 30 some odd has found me carrying out trapping activities usually until the New Year.I trap in a mountainous area and mostly target Pine Marten.I also take other furbeareres as well but for this thread I will only mention Marten and ermine.Pine Marten are marketted as sable and ermine is a winter name for a weasel.
Canada and especially BC lead the world in humane trapping standards. All the animals I target are caught in killing traps

Doug Makes a very fine knife the one I bought from him for skinning my catch preforms flawlessy for its intended task.So far this yearI have caught near 30 marten and have only had to take the steel to the knife to bring it back up to a razor sharpness. The small knife is very comfortable to use and fits the hand nicely. The sheath it came with fits nice and tight

Thanks for looking.Sorry for the poor quality knife photos some how capturing a decent shot of a knife is elusive
Thanks Doug for making fine knives

Great stuff. I wonder if you would like to expand a bit on what you look for in an 'ideal' trap site? Just curious. Thanks for posting!

Danl Nice stuff I like that double catch I bet that is rare. Looks like you do a lot better at trapping than I did. Thanks for the compliments on the knife as well. Good luck the rest of the season. Doug

great pics.. that is some beautiful country.. i wish it was easier to trap around here.. cool looking knife too..

Great stuff, thanks for sharing! What do you bait those traps with to catch Marten and Ermine?

I don't know how you could get a better endorsement for a hunting/skinning knife. Proof is in the proverbial pudding.

Great Pics and great knife. Thanks for sharing.

You are right. Dan told me he wanted to posted and when he called me Thursday to 0rder 2 more Kepharts I told him he had to get those up I want to see what he had. Doug

Is that a 110 conibear?

If you could post more details of the mechanics of trapping, I'd appreciate it. Sets, baits, etc. Thanks!

Looks like some prime fur there dan'l, good luck at auction, the word down here is that North American prices are way down this year, at least for coon and fox. Nice box set by the way.

Wow thanks for the warm responses.I didnt know if I should post and duck as sometimes trapping isnt well recieved.
For trap placement I like to set on structure breaks or edges.Animals are much dictated where and how they travel in the woods by topography of course. There maybe a bench that runs down over a hill and anything travelling along is naturally funnelled into such locations>Takes awhile to reconize but once on to a good location you can count on animals travelling that spot all the time

The trap pictured is a 120 having 2 springs while the 110 has only a single spring.
another picture to show the relative size of a pine marten

And another of the ermine

For bait I typically take out trimmings from our localwild meat proccessor, usuall deer or could be moose or elk
A martenin the box trap used at this site was a Rudy 120

Dougs knife needs a quick touch on the Lansky after quite a bit of skinning

Not too many pictures at all, very good stuff in fact. I'm fascinated by the art of trapping, would like to get into it myself someday.

Thanks for posting this interesting stuff. No need to duck as far as I'm concerned. Best wishes from New Zealand.... Coote.

Great post Dan; trapping is a lost art and it's great to see in still being used. I did a little trappinig as a kid when a local mink farm was shut down (and I think they just released most of them to the wild). It sure likes like your populations are pretty healthy up there!

BC is such a beautiful area, thanks for sharing!
