Ok so 3 weeks ago I ordered a DP SGK. I had him make it with a 3.5 inch handle for my big paws. The blade is small at three inches. it also has maple burl handles. so i got it today. took 2 days for me to get teh knife. that is awesome in my opinion. Ok so here are ym initional impressions.
The Good: First I would like to say that Doug is awesome at comunication. He kept in contact with me the whole time and was patient with me asking all my quesions. I even used Paypal for the first time. Ok now ontot eh good of the knife.
1) The size. I was looking for a smaller neck knife. This is it. Reminds me of the mini canadian.
2) Comes with a kydex sheath. nothing fancy but it holds the knife tight as can be.
3) The Maple Burl handles have great character to them. Lots of swirls and it has a nice dark color.
4) 1095. Need is say more?
5) I had the option of flat, hollow, or convex ground. Chose convex. Always good to have choices.
The Nuetral: Ok well the knife was convex ground BUT had a micro bevel. Didnt know he did those or i woulda asked him to forgo it. Not a bad thing since some like it, just not for me.
Ok and here is the Bad, the part i hate doing.
1) Ok the knife came dull. Even with the micro bevel it couldnt cut open an envelope. Being dull is a big pet peeve of mine.
2) The handles, though great in color, werent sanded flat to be attached to the tang. Not a bad thing, but jsut a little awkward to look at.
3) The tang still had grind marks in it. There were only 3, 2 of which i was able to sharpen out. However there is one large one on the right side of the blade that is pretty large and flat. will come out with time id like to think
4) Ok and here is teh final thing i have found wrong. The blade is a little off center, maybe 1/8 or less inch to the right of the tang. I checked it with a rule to see if i was jsut seeing wrong. Sadly i wasnt
Now even with these things here, i have to say that i like the knife. fits well in my hands and i was able to sharpen it to hair popping sharp. Tied a shoe lace on the sheath lol but im using it as a neck knife now. Great little pocket scapel i think. Now i do want to say this also, even though my knife wasnt perfect, i would not hesitate to buy from doug again. And that should go for you guys too. Ill have pictures up in the next few days so everyone can see the knife. Hope this helps out a bit. Talk to yall in a little.
