1) Look into your local/state laws, as your in NY your going to want to read up on them BIG TIME

2) Look into your local/state laws

3) DPMS is a good basic brand, they used to rank a lot higher up on my list of manufactures, but times have changed and now they tend to rank (with many people) as a basic level AR civilian supplier.

4) Chrome of Nitride coating for the barrel doesn't matter if your just hitting up the range.

I'm not all up and up on NY laws as I don't live there, but I believe theres more to it then just having a pinned stock, I think theres also a no flash hider/bayo mount and 10rd mag dealio to make it NY compliant. Your going to need to look into local and state laws before buying.

Depending on how much your paying for this rifle you may want to consider a different brand, for example S&W makes a quite nice MP15 compliant that for the price is a great starting point into the AR world and the customer support from M&P has been from my experience quite a bit better then DPMS in the past few years.

YMMV but I'd consider a few other brands before you opt for a DPMS.

Oh yeah, i knew about the flash hider/bayo lug,,,but i think you can have a break if its fixed....IF you get a pre 1994 manufactired lower you can have all the goodies.

found this if i am looking in the right place

NYS Penal law:

"Assault weapon" means (a) a semiautomatic rifle that has an
ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least two of the
following characteristics:
(i) a folding or telescoping stock;
(ii) a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of
the weapon;
(iii) a bayonet mount;
(iv) a flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a
flash suppressor
you can have any two of the following

Pistol grip
Detachable mag(or fixed mag with more than 5 round capacity)
flash supressor(or threaded barrel)
bayo lug
telescoping/folding stock

now i found this

Quote:
A semi-automatic rifle is an assault weapon if it can accept a detachable magazine and has two or more of the following:
•A folding or telescoping stock
•A pistol grip
•A bayonet mount
•A flash suppressor, or threads to attach one
•A grenade launcher.

Muzzle breaks are OK as long as they are permanently attached, or no flash supressor exists for the weapon, i.e. a romanian akm.

chrome lined barrel makes it easier to clean.
make sure you're getting a 5.56 chamber, not a .223 chamber, there is a slight difference and the 5.56 chamber is less prone to jam when you're goofing off and rapid firing.
pinning the stock to make it legal or picking up an A2 stock beats taking the chance of having it seized as an assault weapon and getting a felony ding on your record.
post pics once it's been to the range with you.

I will, i am going to go to a gun shop by me next weekend, but i would never buy from them they have a O.R.C bushmaster 16"er for $999, they are overpriced at this place, granted they should be able to answer my questions, to which i will ask

is it normal to "function" check a firearm in a store , not that there would be a round in the chamber, i just have seen other videos where people when looking at a firearm, wether it be finished firing at a range, or doing a youtube review in the home, they pull the charging handle to make sure its "clear". . I always pratice gun saftey, you know. finger off the trigger untill your ready to shoot, always keep the muzzle in a safe direction,,ect

I would NOT rely solely on Internet information relative to firearms possession given various jurisdictions and their laws UNLESS you like jail food.

Seriously a visit to a good local gun club in your area and a visit to your CHIEF law enforcement officer[ usually the Sheriff] would be good first steps.

Pinned stocks and flash suppressors usually get their pins welded so the user cannot remove without tools.

Might visit AR15.com for information after your chief LEO..lot of good BUT Internet info.

You do know that AR variant ownership is considered "EBRD" - Evil Black Rifle Disease.

I hear you,,believe me i am not relying on internet information, i may visit a gun store tomorow, to look and inquire. I am aware of ny 922r compliance, i will make sure whatever i get will not compromise anything, i dont need any suprise encounters with atf which i heard "sometimes" stops by the range i plan to take the AR to. If and when i get

one website that shall remain nameless will only ship "compliant" firearms to you FFL...i plan to support locally
