Hey everyone, Just got BOTH of these amazing blades from DPx Gear. I know some people are iffy on DPx Gear because of the split from ESEE, but from what Mr. Jeff Randall has said, they split on good terms and continue to work well with eachother. with that in mind I say if you are the least bit interested in any DPx Gear products, go for it. you will not be disappointed. ;)

Now, some of you who are reading this probably already have seen the H.E.S.T. II or atleast speculated on whether or not It would be worth dropping $200+ bucks on to have it now, since it is a limited run, although there will be a second run to follow this initial wave, but i would suspect that they will sell extremely fast, just as the originals did. but this is for good reason, as this knife is, in my humble opinion, worth every penny, and will certainly be a very easy to get your money paid back in full and then some if you do decide to sell it in about a year or two, as limited runs usually always are extremely valuable once they have been sold out.

ANYWAY!!! Now here is what i have to say about the new and improved DPx Gear H.E.S.T. II Assault and Woodsman versions!!!

Lets start with the assault, since it is the one i got first and have used the most. It also happens to be the... less impressive of the two in my opinion, just because the assault sheath was a little bit awkward, and the woodsman is a piece of ART. :D

I have to say, this blade is supreme! the edges around the entire handle portion are all rounded off, it feels like what the Chris Reeve Professional Solider felt like in the hand, smooth, comfortable, and yes, silky smooth to the touch! The TiNi coating is excellent, as to be expected from a PVD coating, now, it does and WILL show scratches. but get over it. id rather carry a knife that can say I've been through hell and back and this is what kept me alive, rather than i have a big wallet and im not afraid to spend it!!! and of course, the stonewashed finish on the woodsman is just incredible. its literally gorgeous. im scared to use the woodsman because i dont want to even smudge the finish haha! :D it really is beautiful. the silver sheen of it goes extremely well with the black G-10 IMHO...

I Love the nice thick G-10, its solid and well checkered too. the woodsman handle scales are hollow and made out of wood, it feels sturdy, but it is hollow enough that you can tell with a tap, that you probably should not try to smash it repeatedly on the ground / stomp on it ect. then again, these are my fist experience with wooden handles, and i have to say that i am quite impressed! the new angles on the scales seem odd, but are extremely comfortable in hand. choking up feels like holding a 1911, im not kidding, it just lets your fingers slide and lock into place and there is no way it should ever come out of your hands for any reason.

The Sleipner steel is just great, it really does feel like really hard D2, which admittedly does not like to push cut with a keen edge, but Sleipner seems to push cut a little easier with a keen edge, and alot more with a polished edge. have not used it enough to give a final word on it yet, but that's about the gist of it, hell the pry bar is sharp too!!!(something to consider during neck carry... ouch...)

the new angle on the prybar is a little more chopping friendly on the hand, but it can still kind of just get in the way when chopping. works good for splitting! and it certainly does still pry like a damn crowbar, same with the bottle opener notch.

I have not yet found a use for the wire stripper 'jimping' other than 3 different size wire breaker notches, the bottle opener is where the thumb usually ends up when choking up on the blade, but it does not matter to me, id rather have no jimping, as all i've found it good for is tearing up pockets and pinching my fingers in between it and the sheath, although, this knife does not have that problem, even with the shrink tube sheath, and absolutely none with the leather sheath.

The woodsman's sheath, and stonewash finish, not to mention beautiful scales, make it IMHO far more valuable than the Assault, but the Assault is still an excellent knife, i just wish they had done kydex and not shrink tube, even if the shrink tube is slightly lighter and is actually fairly good in conjunction with the rest of the assault sheath. the leather sheath is just magnificent. reminds me of a mora sheath, covers up to mid handle, but instead of plastic it really is genuine leather, and is great to put some compound on for touching up your edge in the field. good snaps, no jiggle, its in there tight but not when you need to take it out, it just slides effortlessly from the sheath and into your hand. the snaps are perfect too, tight but will pop open with almost no force at all. DPx Gear sent me the DeSantis sheath, and guys, its exceptional. :p

In conclusion, these are EXCELLENT blades, I am so happy with them, I went ahead and took off the wood scales on the woodsman, and put on the Black G-10, and just as i suspected, Its stonewashed finish and black checkered G-10 make this blade look like a $1,500 two-tone SIG. :D I will be sending the wood scales to Kryptoglow, and he will be making some awesome stuff, im sure! Daniel is a great dude, and i seriously recommend all of his work. Anyway, here are some pictures for you all, hope you all like them!

Thanks for reading guys! be safe out there and careful with those damn things, you'll poke an eye out!!!;)

How would you pry with that prybar on the handle? neither sheath looks like it would make prying easy and I wouldn't pry anything with the blade exposed...maybe I am missing something... but the prybar on that knife looks to me like an accident waiting to happen and a self inflicted injury with your own survival knife probably isn't very helpful in a hostile environment...

Does that spike sticking out of the pommel ever gouge into your side or snag on things when carrying in the sheath?

Most people here are "iffy" on DPx due to his asshattery and personal threats on this forum a while back. I wouldn't walk across the street to pick up a pallet of his knives for free after the way he conducted himself...

In regard to the pry bar, it can be sharpened, but its quite dull. i dont think it is physically possible to use either pry bar while the knife is sheathed, and having the blade exposed was seriously not a problem, and I used the knife to pry off gutters and well, mostly open soda pull tabs just for shits and giggles :D It can be uncomfortable in neck carry, and I've heard a horror story of someone having a 1/4th inch gash in their side from carrying it, but i used it in that configuration at work, and wore it at the Ren Fare no problem. i would probably not wear it under nothing, maybe a shirt under to protect from any crazy accidents, but then again this really is more of a fixed blade for your pocket or bag or belt, not your neck, its a tad heavy for that. (4 oz???) those facts alone may turn some people off to the knife, to me its a another little handy feature, but i feel like this knife gets as much shit or more as the tom brown tracker for the design, you either REALLY love it, or you F***ing HATE it. i personally love it, it's just one of those knives that you just see and you really love the bladeshape and ergonomics more than anything else. (but thats just me, i like those crazy looking blades). when sheathed in the leather, there is absolutely no problem. i also had no problem with the "cordura" sheath, except that i had to open a foot and a half long velcro strap thing to eve start to retrieve the knife. the DeSantis sheath is excellent, but theres the snagging problem again. i keep the assault in the desantis sheath inside my glovebox or in my pack, woodsman on my belt in the leather. hope that helps guys, the pry bar isn't as dangerous as it is uncomfortable on the neck. i think i could explain better with some pictures of actually using the knives, which will happen soon :)

Huh, i wasn't aware of such misbehavior... i do not agree with everything he does, or who he may be, but i didnt buy a knife designed by him for his signature, i just like his knife, so what HE does and who he is, in my opinion, is not something i care about. I know that kind of "whateverness" is not usually something everyone else can tolerate, but seriously, this is a Lionsteel knife. it may have DPX Gear stamped on it, but it really is just a lionsteel fixed blade. but as far as RYP goes, i could care less about silly "politics" so i wanted to give an unbiased review... I can certainly understand and fully respect not buying a knife with his name on it for that reason. i just consider all of their stuff to be cheap lionsteel's with odd designs, which is why i even bother spending on them.

Well, I think you posted up a nice review, sorry for butting in.

Good review, thanks for taking the time to put it all together and post it!

" Most people here are "iffy" on DPx due to his asshattery and personal threats on this forum a while back. I wouldn't walk across the street to pick up a pallet of his knives for free after the way he conducted himself..."

The truth is one of the posters on this forum consistently and without provocation insulted and bullied one of our customers who had a medical condition and was going through . I asked him politely to identify himself. When he didn't I posted his self posted internet information so that the person he constantly bullied and threatened could see who the tough guy was.

That internet tough guy then begged me to take his information down because he would be fired by his employer who he represents on the interent. I explained nicely that it was unnecessary and cowardly to bully well intentioned knife enthusiasts via the internet and that his attempts to conceal his identify were not really a protection.

The crime is called "cyberbullying" but the owner of this site insists he is not responsible for the posts made here (even though he edits and deletes posts) Either way we don't support abuse of our customers and will send details of violations to the victims and to law enforcement where appropriate.

http://criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-charges/cyber-bullying.htm

This is a major problem with forums who allow people to post under aliases to both insult and abuse well intentioned enthusiasts. Many of these people are unaware of the emotional damage they do to strangers who simply want to share opinions and reviews. In this case the victim had a facial deformity had just lost his job and had just purchased two of our products. The forum owners would do nothing and the victimizer was relentless, crude and abusive in his constant remarks.

Its counter productive as you can see from the above retort since it has nothing to do with someone's opinion of a product. Its' also not healthy for the industry and encourages abuse. That's why we and other knife manufacturers don't and can't participate on this forum anymore. You will note that the success of manufacturers and their products have nothing to do with the opinions on this forum.

In my world, if someone has opinions they should have the cojones to put their name next to them. If the owners of this forum see abuse against customers they should notify the appropriate authorities and remove people who constantly use this business as a way to threaten and abuse strangers.

The review above is an honest one and as he points out unrelated to fabricated opinions of "most people" which would actually be "very few people"

As always I am always available at trade shows or at the office for internet tough guys to stop in and say hi. They never do.

Peace out.

@ philsk8salot

Allow me to apologize for the behavior in this thread. You took the time to write an honest review and it turned in to a soap box for several people.

To those of you who decided to stink up this thread, I suggest you think twice before doing it again.

@ RYP

RYP,

Yes there are few of us that are quite familiar with posers and rip off artists and we do not like to see uninformed people supporting them. In my world they do not get much lower.
