DPX HEST Folder Takedown Question

So I just recently purchased a HEST 2.0 folder and noticed that it had a super hard opening. I noticed that the blade was off centered and figured it had to be the pivot.

So I tried unscrewing the male pivot and found out it wasn't even snug, it just swung right out. I wanted to remove the blade, so I tried pushing the female pivot out, but it was so snug in there, that I tried to unscrew it with a hex key, it took so much torque to move it but no good. It only spins in there and won't budge out.

I also tried to remove the torx screws on the knife to take it apart, but I couldn't remove the scales at all! It was as if it was glued on. Perhaps I'm not sure if the blade stop pin is just jammed in the scales?

Ultimately I'm asking if anyone has a solution.

They really are just put together that tight. You can use a flat head screwdriver to gently pry the g10 scale off. Thats pretty much the only way to do it.

take it easy

The way i found the easiest to get the female part of the pivot out was to back the male part out (mostly) just leave it a few threads in. Now push on the male part to push the female part out of the pivot hole. Once thats out the G-10 will pry out much easier.

I've heard that this might be due to a very stiff detent. That will make it difficult to open and when closed will push the blade off center. I know I'm a few days late to this, but let us know what happened.

Anyone found a solution?

How common are the off-center/ hard-opening issues?

Sorry about the late reply. I was able to take the scales apart, but I found that somehow the female pivot would not budge out of the titanium frame side. Strangely the male pivot had nothing to do with how tight the blade would be overall. For some reason I find that the scales would somehow bind together tightly negating the factor of an adjusting pivot screw. The off centering is easily fixed, at least for me but the opening is still a bit stiff.

On a side note, I had rust through the coating on the tang of the knife which revealed pitting. Decided to just sandpaper the whole blade and strip the coating.

Rust and pitting on a brand new knife?
I'll just stand over here on the other side of the room, in case that's catching.

I just picked one up Friday in a trade at a knife shop.
Overall not bad for the money. I am glad it doesn't have that silly skull thing anywhere on it, probably would have been a deal breaker.
One thing I didn't think to check was the uneven grind but it's an excuse to go ahead and re-profile with diamond rods on my Sharpmaker.
The pivot thing is pretty hokey, mine is finger tight and the pivot is just barely loose enough to be acceptable. Maybe it will break in.

Is the OP sure it was a new one? I know I'm a little late chiming in here. The issues sound like the original ones. Mine was a little tight opening at first but is smooth now with just some use. Blade was centered and lock up is strong. Lion Steel did a good job imho or maybe I was lucky. Hope it works out. I really like this knife.
