I've been sorta looking around for awhile now, for a small, but stout fixed blade to carry in my EDC "pack", as a preparedness blade for an urban environment.

Little pricey, but the extra features are reeeeally making it look like a candidate.

Think it would work?

I think it would fit that role nicely. It sure is a stout little bugger, thick and beefy. Also the prybar pommel would be nice to have in a BOB.

Can't go wrong with the HEST. I use mines for EDC, couldn't ask for anything better. I don't even carry my folder no more. Its pricey if you want one of the first 250 or you can wait till they make it available to dealers. Than it'll cost bout 100. Very good knife, perfect size handle, perfect size blade, built very well IMO

Will they be available from dealers with the micarta handles of the DPX?

Those are one of the selling points for me!

The dealer version will have all the hardware, just without the DPX serial number and accompanying book.

I browsed through the book you get with the DPX HEST tonight, and it looks like one I want to read, and he still had the serial numbered one that matches my RAT pack number, so I totally splurged and ordered one tonight!!!

Good Job on the splurge, you will be happy! Mine arrived over the weekend and the book was personally autographed to me and there is a certificate of authenticity stating my name and that I am the registered owner of HEST #117 also signed and dated by Robert Pelton!

A lot of trouble and thought went into this and could not be happier!
