I had the pleasure of a new bladesmith coming by to spend some quality anvil and forge time with me today. The first thing he hopped out of the car was one of Dr. Darom's books, "Custom Knifemaking" I believe. Said it was inspirational and he was learning a lot from it. :D

We forged full tang hunters. He said it was the best knife he'd ever forged (in spite of my help) and that he learned a lot. Funniest thing was we were discussing a problem he had with the tip rising while forging (common problem) and I told him I'd show him how to fix it when we got to that point. I pulled out the ole whomping stick and straightened the blade out. The look on his face was priceless. "A big stick?" Yep, big ole stick :D

Just thought I'd share that with y'all cause I know all of you were wondering what I did today. :p Oh yeah, got 2 knives finished up and working on leather while waiting for him :p

I think you are referring to the book titled, The Art of Modern Custom Knifemaking.

Let's see them.

Let's see them.

Keith, nothing fancy... simply 2 of my "pocket knives" for a nice customer. One hemp wrapped the other with brown micarta and SS fittings.

I do have a knife in the works that some will like and make other probably :barf: it's a cross between a cartouche knife and Don Fogg's Gent's knife series. I plan on doing some shaping on the integral part. Haven't decided on a handle material yet. I'm either going with ebony and domed NS pins, maybe like 6 or 8 following the contour. I have some very tight grained bocote that swirls around a knot and matches the contour or some red stag for scales. Can't really decide yet.

Edited to add:

I don't buff handles until after I finish the sheath anddddddd you didn't think I was going to show YOU those knives until the owner sees them do you? :p

Will,
I have to agree with the young knifemaker who visited with you.

My third book "The Art of Modern Custom Knifemaking" (2006)
is a good starting point for anyone with aspirations of knifemaking.

It has over 1,600 illustrations displaying nearly 100 knifemaking
and knifemaking related projects.

Here is one sample of a 4 page section from the book:

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)
