In the book Hannibal, Dr. Lecter went to the Atlantic gun & knife show, and specially asked the vendor for the Spyderco Civilian. The vendor told him few people knew about that knife anymore because it was out of production, and that he only had a used one along with him. And Lecter said he only wanted 1, so he bought.

Thats a bad knife! But in the movie he had a harpy I think. Either one would be terrible in his hands!

Yeah, in the book he asks for a Civvie, in the movie he wields the Harpy. BA evisceration tools in proper hands either way.

It's not "bad", it's "EVIL". The Civilian is a knife primarily designed for specialty law enforcement use. The Civilian is supposed to have one intended use and that being self defense. I will admit that this is not a knife for everyone but in this increasingly dangerous world in which we reside you need all of the defensive hardware you can get. And this is a great addition to anyone's self defense tool chest. Also this has simply got to be a Martial Arts Classic in a league all of it's own, hence the special attention caught from Dr. Lecter.

In the book, the Harpy is mentioned a couple of times...once when he opens some mail, and later at a gun show he buys another Harpy, along with the Civilian, if I remember correctly.

I think you're right about that. It's cool Harris used knives by name in his books.

To be specific, at first, he bought a Harpy, a Spyderco straight knife, a saw and a rubber club. And then, he asked the vendor specially for a Civillian. The Civillian was the last one he specifically asked for, while he bought the prior ones without asking, which displays his special keenness for this one. Am I right?

You are right. I remember he had a Harpy early in the book opening an envelope or something, and I'm guessing he either had to ditch the knife, or lost it, in Europe. It didn't say either way. Then at the gun show in the States, I just remember him asking for the Civvie after saying, "I'll have that Harpy, please." Or something to that effect. :) It's been quite a while since I read the book.

I loved the book too. I think the 2nd book "Hannibal" was the best one in Harris' Hannibal Trilogy. What do y'all think?
