West Coast Academy is proud to host a 3-day training camp with Dr. Gyi, head of the American Bando Association. Dr. Gyi is a veteran of WWII and the Korean conflict; he is a member of the 10th Burma Gurkha Regiment and later with the 3/9 Burma Gurkha Regiment during WWII. He currently serves as a highly respected avisor and consultant to US Military Forces.

During the 3-day camp, Dr. Gyi will be covering survival skills w/ both Kukri and folding knife. Combat techniques, footwork, cutting technique, timing, stealth and many other topics will be covered.

Don't miss this chance to train with a living legend in an intimate atmosphere.

Here are the details:

Dates: June 16-18

Contact: West Coast Academy, 714-775-0200
Cost: $195

Preregistration is required. Campgrounds will be provided. Please bring appropriate camping equipment. Checklist will provided upon registration.

Thanks, and see you all there!

I would recomend this to anyone with an intrest in MA. You will work HARD. In the end you will walk away with a lot of info, take notes after the day is over.

It's sounds really cool, but how much MA experience do you need to already have?

Matt, you apparently went to one camp. Did you post anything more anywhere about it, is there more you'd be comfortable posting?

For anyone who hasn't heard, Dr.Gyi doesn't want too much of Bando discussed by his students on the web, and likely for very good reason. But Uncle Bill tells me that we do have Bando people reading this forum regularly.

Now there's a thought we all ought to keep in mind - there are many lurkers, and every time we post we are sealing our reputation.

I know a few months back one ( was it the secretary of the ABA? - if you're reading, drop me an email to say hello ) sent me email which correctly ( drat! ) pointed out to me that I wasn't in the right when I said a few things in an argument that hadn't gotten to the flame point. Well, no flames yet, but more red pepper sauce than the recipe for harmony called for.

I didn't like it much at the time, as it didn't say the other guy was right or wrong, nor that I was *wrong*, just that I wasn't in the right.

Omrie,

No previous experience is necessary. While you will work hard and the days will be packed with information, Dr. Gyi starts from the ground up and builds a foundation on which you can use to continue your training.

Sometimes, more experienced martial artists have a tougher time in some areas as they have to "unlearn" the ways they are used to doing things in order to learn new methods.

Rusty:

Point well taken. We should all take care to think before speaking, and show each other the respect that a person deserves.

Hope to see you all there! It promises to be a great weekend, and an awesome way to bring in the summer season.

or perhapse closer to the East coast?

How far ahead do you have to register? If anyone lives near Northern IN, and wants to make one colossal road trip drop me a mail. I plan to learn and travel as much as I can when the weather gets warmer here and company is welcome. Just get in contact with me.

I recommend registering as early as possible as we expect to fill up all slots a few weeks before the event. Typically, Dr. Gyi's events are highly popular with a huge showing of students from the Inosanto Academy along with the local Bando constituents. Last year, we had even had a surprise visit from Pendekar Paul DeThoars!

I want to acknowledge that I got a private email after posting, letting me know where to look and who to ask for info if I was serious.

They are good guys, and thanks to them for that appreciated courtesy. Unfortunately between Fallon Nevada,( 60 miles out of Reno ) where the Navy now has their Top Gun school, and the outskirts of Las Vegas, I'm truly in the sticks. From Las Vegas, go north to the first traffic light. Go straight. Turn left at the stopsign. From Fallon, go to the first traffic light. Turn right and then left at the stopsign. Go five blocks and turn right onto West Third St. When you see a white mazda pickup with a "Courtesy is Contagious" bumper sticker in the rear window, you're at my place. Oh, and from the east gate of Yosemite head northeast into Nevada and turn left at the first traffic light...

I told you I was out in the sticks!

Went to the post office every day this week. Today where there used to be a local mail slot and an out of town slot there's just the out of town slot.

Seems that OSHA ( Occupational Safety and Health Administration decided our local PO's cancelling machine had unshielded belts and pulleys thus endandangering worker safety. So when the local utility bills get mailed and when Aunt Maude just down the street, whose box at the postal station is 3 feet away from yours sends you a birthday card it all gets sent a hundred thirty-two miles to Reno, cancelled there, and sent a hundred thirty- two miles back for a 264 mile round trip to move those 3 feet.

'Course I would never use email to tip off the biggest Reno TV station
( newschannel8@kolo.com ) about it. VBEG
