Outside right now on the back patio. There must be over 50 dragon flies flying around. I have never seen this many at one time! I love looking at them when they land close by but these guys won't land.

Must be something in the Ohio air tonight cause there are hundreds out around the pond where normally I might see 3-5 at a time. Weird.

Years ago I was sitting on the front steps and noticed more than a few dragonflies hovering over the lawn in front of me. We are over a mile from water, so dragonflies are scarce in this neighborhood. After a little observation, it was apparent that the dfs were hovering in one area, then diving to the ground. Looking in the lawn I found that ants were swarming up out of a nest, and many were taking flight. So the df were picking off the ants as they launched. I felt that I had seen something extraordinary, and wondered how the df knew to gather there to feed.

That is awesome!! Some of them look happy. some mad... Its cool, its like they have facial expressions :)

And thanks! Pepsi=delicious :D

Love Dragonflies. They are considered one of my totems as far as my native roots are concerned.

Darn, I thought this was code for the folder or something cool was coming out.

"Dragon flies this evening" you know like "the monkey is in the bell tower" or "Beef has the toolbox" or "Garth is riding the unicorn" or "Guess what day it is"

They are all codes I tell you :)

Every fall, ants perform what is called a "nuptial flight". Basically, a winged virgin queen flies around and gets inseminated. Once inseminated, the queen will lose her wings and create a new colony. Dragonflies dine on insects, and virgin queens aren't exactly agile, hence the sudden abundance of dragonflies :)

As a bike racer, I'm forced to ride through these clouds of winged ants during the fall. They do bite, and I often end up with what looks like acute psoriasis from the patches of bites they produce before I can neutralize them.

Damn nature, you scary!

Pink dragonflies are my favorite

I was visiting my brother at his house Tuesday night when 100's of dragonflies were all around us just suddenly. They stuck around for maybe 30 minutes then disappeared. I even said I waspretty sure there is a scary movie that has a scene like this in it..
