First let me say unfortunately no pics it happened to fast and it was getting to dark. It was Friday night i was sitting in a friends yard in Chicago when all of a sudden the sky got dark not unusual this time of year as we always see flocks of sparrows at dusk circling getting ready to nest but when i looked up it was the most dragonflies I've ever seen there were thousand's of them all flying south. I've never seen this in my 40 plus years has anyone else. ? I've read since that this is sometimes seen ahead of a cold front and sure enough the remnants of hurricane Isaac were coming through.

I saw it once many years ago, here in Sacramento. I was maybe ten years old, and just like you described, so many dragonflies flew by, maybe 10-12' off the ground, that it shadowed the yard I was in. I don't remember the weather, and it was so odd that in later years I thought I must have imagined it. Glad I'm not crazy!

Lady Bug swarm, yes. At 8500 feet in the southern Rockies in early August. Dragon flies, no. Isn't nature a trip?

A few years ago I saw the same thing here in NC, but they didn't seem to be headed in any one direction. The night we saw them they were just swarming like they were feeding, but there were thousands of them. I was sitting with my dad, and he'd never seen anything like it either. Maybe that group had flown as far south as they'd planned?

It was an awesome thing to see either way.

What was so strange to me that all the birds were no ware to be seen while this was going on i would have thought it would have been a feast for them that and they seemed to be from 5 feet off the ground all the way to a few hundred feet all going the same way and yes nature is a trip .
