The Dragon YCS arrived today and I know some of you wanted pictures.
I opened it and cleaned off all the oil from the blade and the red rouge from the handle.

Getting good images of engraving is hard.

I had to find an alternate location for the photos since Yangdu didn't include the gnarled stump with the knife. <smily deleted for photo limit>

I am kicking myself for not shooting for that one...not having the money is irrelevant: may not ever see one like that again. :(

She totally underpriced it/you recognized a great deal

that's how it goes in the sharktank: one split second to decide, and THEN, only if you're lucky/fast

some of these art khukuris should never be used but that one, well. It'd look good with a stain finish too. If you know what I mean.

Congrats, Eric.

Wonderful wonderful wonderful!

I can see that one being kept oiled and honed and housed in a silk lined ebony box with a dragon head clasp.
The zombie horde has risen...again. <<click>> <<click>> and the dragon's jaws swing open granting entrance to the black box holding powerful juju. She sits waiting with the sheen of the spark of life itself. Eric hefts her carefully out from her cradle and feels the dragon's lungs draw full of air.
A clumsy rattling of the doorknob with dull hungry moans.
"Once more unto the breach, old friend," he quietly whispers to the blade as his shoulders tense kicking the door latch from its frame...

Beautiful YCS.

eswartz, thanks for the pics - do you think you could email me the higher res versions? I tried to find your email but it seems like you don't have one associated with your BF account.

Congrats on grabbing a great khuk! I love thos pictures of it, in front of all of that great reading!
Beautiful way to display a great khuk.

Thanks for sharing those great pictures. For my purposes, almost as good as owning the knife!

Not!!!

To my eye, that puts any Kothimoda, or any other Khukuri to shame that I have seen thus far.

You may have gotten the deal of a lifetime on that one. Even if I were very generous with my time, no way I could cut that engraving or the carving for $255.

And you got the knives too!

I was way late, and don't have the money, but it makes me think I should find a way to have money around.

Alas! I can no longer hang out at the tank like I did when self employed.

Almost makes me want to go back down to NC...

I am pretty picky about decorative work, at least as far as wanting to own it for myself.

That knife is just drop dead gorgeous!

may you treasure and enjoy it for many happy years!

nice steel.

p.s. - are those real books?

Yep, those are real books. I collect first edition speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, horror) books, but those few shelves are leather bound reprints of classic sf, fantasy and other fiction (mainly the Hornblower set). I've even read most of them.

Here is a gratuitous shot of the living room (or as I like to call it, the library) at present.

Of all these, I have read about half. Got married, had two kids, and the reading time dried up.

I think I have the email set right. I looked at the setting and it seems to be there. I'll look into it further.

The photos are probably large for email. So I put a bunch of the high res images (more than I posted) at:

http://www.io.com/~eswartz/Hi Res

That you can download and save.

Eric,

Beautiful knife and great pics! Thanks for sharing. I have one Hi knife with somewhat similar dragon engraving, but that is just over the top, and the companion knives are even better. Also, I have several YCS kardas, and that little one you have there is unique IMO. It has a nice deep belly to it usually lacking on those.

BTW, I thought I was looking at one of my own shelves! I buy a lot of Easton Press. Nice stuff. Not sure if you have them, but to go with your Tolkien set you should look into "The Complete Guide to Middle Earth" and the larger "Atlas of Middle Earth" in the same bindings. I just finished getting the Hornblower set last year.

For some reason the SF series didn't appeal to me, but I do have the Conan Doyles, Steinbeck, and several other sets. Did you see that they just came out with an E.R Burroughs series?

Anyway, great stuff, and thanks again.

Eric,

Shockingly beautiful khuk. Easily the most beautiful I've seen. What Tom said is quite a mouthfull on the quality of the decoration too. I think I'd print that post and keep it with my documentation.

Also, your home is lovely, and I really like the books too.

Very good thread. Thanks for posting the pics.

Brent too has a dragon blade that was not to be thrown out with the sardine heads into the trash.....

It looks to me like the Dragon here is guarding the great books of fantasy and literature.

One more dragon blade was issued by Bill a long time ago to somebody who didn't order engravings of dragon........read that from Bill's prevrious posts.

I have a dragon-engraved AK from Shop 1. It's nice, but... my whole collection just got re-graded with the new top end that we saw here :)

I also just found out that the powers-that-be have apparently unblocked Bladeforums from my work computer. I have been ignoring the DOTD posts due to lack of daytime access, and had mostly convinced myself that the situation was okay...

I am aware of them, but needed to stop buying Easton since it cut into my knife money. :)

BUT, I did go to the used book store last week and they had 10 sf titles that I didn't already have for ony $20 apiece. Had to get them. One of them was even from the SF signed first edition series.
