Dragonfly 2 Salt reborn.....Tanto pimp!

While cleaning up my house I found a long neglected Dragonfly 2 Salt, It was one of the first knives I bought and I remembered not liking it because of the steel's tendency to dull very quickly. Since then it was left lying around and the last time I saw it the tip was broken and the edge was chipped and resembled a serrated edge...

I thought, maybe I can have some fun with it, I took out the grinder and straightened the belly, flattened the broken tip, sharpened it back to shaving sharp and now I have something I can use again! I figured 95% of my uses are the tip for opening up packaged items, occasional cutting that doesn't require a blade length more than 1" or so, the tanto point is by no means perfect but I'm sure it'll do the job nicely!

Thanks for looking!!

I was incredibly skeptical when I saw the title, but it looks fantastic. Nice job man, that blade shape really suits the dragonfly somehow, can you post a pic of it closed?

Looks really good! How does it look closed?

I think of the Dragonfly as the little Cally of Spyderco. Who remembers the Copilot?

Nice job on the regrind, any problems with overheating? I always get nervous when I see the words,

Okay, I have to ask. Given the strength and toughness of H-1 steel, how in the world did you manage to break the tip? I've seen pictures of an H-1 blade bent almost 90 degrees without breaking.

Nice job on the repair, though. Not my cup of tea, but is well done.

It looks great, I have to admit (though I do not personally have a use for tanto blades). Let us see a photo of it closed.

Thanks for the replies guys. FYI it looks just like a regular Dragonfly when closed, nothing special. When I said grinder, i merely took off about 1/8" or less, it wasn't even hot to touch. The tanto part I did with a hand file and finished freehand on a 400/800 1200 then stropped. I use the tanto point to score wood for my woodworking a lot, that's why it really doesn't have to be sharp.

Not usually a tanto fan but it really works with the leaf/spyderhole.

yeah im curious too. what task made the tip break off? ive bent h1 serrated teeth side to side trying to saw through dead palm fronds i shouldnt have. took a steel and got them straight with breaking. no worse for the wear but work hardened that they didnt bend again doing the same stupid thing.

not a bad idea for a fix, nicely done all in all.

Nice work! I'm impressed with the grind. The shape actually turned out really cool.

Suits my purpose, I just needed a "folding tool with a point and a bit of a sharp edge"! :D
