I'm for sure the next spyderco I get is going to be the DF2. Just cant decide if I want to try the zdp. I do not currently own any advanced sharpening systems or strops so I really can't maintain it currently. But would it be worth the investment? I do plumbing work and would be EDC for me. So what I'm getting at is the edge retention of the exotic steel worth the hassle? Thanks

Edge retention of the zdp spyderco uses is a huge diefference from vg10 and dont get me wrong vg10 is one of my favs. If you dont mind spending a extra time sharpening then zdp is perfect but if you are use to quick touch ups like vg10 then zdp can be a pain in the ass. I have the zdp draginfly and love it i just wish there were more color options than BRG an orange zdp would be sweet

Yeah I'm probably going vg 10 since that's more what I'm accustomed to maintaining. But sometimes I think I'd like to try the zdp just for the variety and to say I have it.

I picked up 2 with ZDP and have developed a chronic case of Carpal Tunnel trying to keep an edge on them. And yes I've followed all of the constructive advice on sharpening methods. All of my other steels are razors but the ZDP has defeated me. I give.

I prefer ZDP-189 over vg-10. Both are great steels but if you touch up ZDP on a regular bases it's not all that bad to maintain. I would invest in a sharpening system like the sharp maker to start, then learn how to sharpen freehand on a stone like silicon carbide or diamond plates.
