I've lost or misplaced my everyday carry Dragonfly. Of course I could just replace it, but now's my chance to try something new! I originally developed my mild case of Spyder-nuttiness by reading this forum, so I hope y'all can give me some advice!

Main uses/requirements:
  • Open boxes, cut string, everyday cutting.
  • Slice picnic food like cheese & sausage.
  • Shock & awe (most California folks don't expect middle-aged moms to whip out a knife!).
  • Elegant technology, tastefully understated
  • Size similar to Dragonfly (good fit for my hand).

Possible replacements:
  • Spin. Way cool looking, similar small blade, not hollow ground (so better for food?).
  • Polywog. Definitely flashy looking. Ball-bearing lock claims easy-to-clean. Is it too unbalanced? Too sharp-pointed? Hollow-ground good or bad?
  • Cricket. Nifty or too wacky?
  • Navigator II. Looks like a Dragonfly except SS and fingergrips.

How does VG-10 compare to Dragonfly's AUS-8 on a saber-ground or other not-hollow-ground blade? I think I'm leaning toward the NavII or Spin, but the ball-bearing lock on the Cricket sounds interesting.

thanks in advance!

Any of the knives mentioned would be great replacements for your lost Dragonfly. However, the Cricket is not a ball bearing lock. It is a framelock.

Hi Spires.

I went through the exact same dilemna a weeks ago. I already own a Dragonfly, but wanted another small knife. My requirements are pretty much like yours. I had it narrowed down to the Nav or the upcoming Lava. The Lava looked cool, but its unusual design could potentially make it sheeple unfriendly (at least in my mind). Living in Canada, I tend to have knives that don't look too mean or unusual. Also, reviews indicate that the Nav is quite beefy. A small knife that's as strong as a larger one. That, the steel (VG-10 is probably amongst the best out there), and the classic looks made me select the Nav. It's in transit right now. With a bit of luck, I'll have it sometime next week.

Good luck!

The Spin is tiny. way smaller than the Dragonfly. I wouldn't recommend it as a replacement for anyhting other than a keychain knife.

The Cricket is also too small for me to be my EDC go to knife, however I think it's much better than the Spin for that sort of thing. Still, the blade shape wouldn't be good for slicing food.

I've never handled the Poliwog, but it's pretty crazy looking and awkward closed. I say the Navigator 2 is by and far your best bet. Flat grinds are awesome, and it most closly matches you needs with the Dragonfly, while being in a much superior steel, and IMO, a better design overall.

Thanks all! I think I'll go with the NavII. But maybe I can get a spin for my birthday!
