Hello:

I am interested in purchasing an EDC folder with a blade in the 2.5" range. The knife would see light use in the office and occasional use on the trail. After much thought, I narrowed my choices to the Dragonfly and Salsa. To the forumites who are fortunate enough to have owned and used both, which do you prefer and why?

Thanks in advance for your help, -Alex

Buy a SS PE Dragonfly, you won't look back. Been abusing mine for over 2yrs, still rock solid.

SS Fly,its tip is much more useful and it is more comfortable to carry. The cobra hood seems to get in the way when putting the Salsa back in the pocket. The compression lock tends to pinch some users thumbs when disengaged.
You may also want to take a look a the Navigator.eknifeworks.com has them on sale for 29.95

Salsa.
I've never seen a spyderco that parts cardboard faster than the full flat grind.

the SS fly is very office-friendly, much "cuter" than the salsa if that matters to you. Also, I thought the fly was a full flat grind??

Thanks for the feedback. I really like the looks and size of the SS Dragonfly, but I was under the impression that the Salsa might cut better due to the wider blade and handles. Even with its flat grind, can the Dragonfly keep up?

IMO the wide blade does not help in cutting just more of it to drag through. The Salsa is really bad when you need a pointy tip,I can't even get the Salsas tip to get under my finger nail to clean it.

Then you should take the Dragonfly...

I don't have a Salsa, but I like my SS Dragonfly. It is very office friendly. My only complaint is the handle is smallish and thin. I think the design is great, and considering the small overall size of the knife, I am supprised by how much of a grip you can get on it. But for my hand I like the Calypso Jr. much better. Get the Dragonfly for the office, and a Native for camping, or just the Calypso to substitute both.:)

if you're concerned about size...

I use the full handle on my military. on the temp fixed, my fingers are cramped together. I still use my 'fly, even though I can palm the open knife.

best described as "monkey mitts"... long skinny fingers, long fat thumb(hand straight, the end of my thumb hits the same spot as my knuckle on the index)... palm on the large side of normal.

The dragonfly and kiwi both get used. They dissapear in my hands, yet get pretty much everything you expect a knife that size to do, and, in the case of the dragonfly at least, a lot more. I have a neck rig for my 'fly, and carry it 24/7, including shower most of the time.

even when I was sick in october, wore the 'fly under my shirt when I spent 20hrs+ sweating in bed with the flu... not a spot of rust and it hadn't seen oil for a few months.

i don't own a salsa, but i've had a 1st-gen dragonfly for about 10 years, and it is still solid despite abuses that i would not dare mention here.

Get the Dragonfly. I own a Salsa and that handle is more conspicuous than a Cold Steel Vaquero Grande (a folder with a 7" handle). No folder I own screams out "Hey. Look at me. I'm a knife" louder than the Salsa. Of course, it's such a nice knife that I should be doing that screaming, but it's not the most discrete of items.

Thanks to everyone for the good advice. Today, I visited Smoky Mountain Knife Works, and when it came time to make the decision, I totally cracked under the pressure. I bought both the stainless Dragonfly and the titanium Salsa. The Dragonfly will be the EDC I was looking for, and the Salsa will go in the toolbox for heavier chores.

And thank you, Spyderco, for making my choice so difficult... It is nice to choose from such a great selection of small, utilitarian folders. I am a very satisfied customer.

Regards, -Alex

I prefer the SS D'fly. I think it's ergonomics and blade geometry are superior to that of the Salsa.
