Dragonfly2 Salt vs. Delica4 FFG

I know these may seem like they're not even similar and you're right they're not! However, what I'm looking for is a lightweight summer knife that I can wear with light shorts, and bring to the beach without worry. See the similarities becoming clearer?

I had pretty much decided on the Dragonfly2 Salt mostly because the weight and steel, but I'm starting to wonder if its size will knock down its usefulness by several notches. Although quite a bit larger, the Delica4 isn't really much heavier than the Dragonfly2. Should I just go with the Delica4 instead because of the size? Or do you find that the Dragonfly2 is still useful despite the cutting edge being under two inches?

And then there's the whole "H1 vs. VG10" and "HG vs. FFG" discussion but let's skip that and focus on size and weight and usefulness.

Thanks for all you might advise! I'm still pretty new to knives. :)

What are it's intended uses? If you're going to the beach, maybe a clam knife would be best?! :D

Mostly I mentioned going to the beach to justify the higher end steels! As for intended use, I don't know! I carry a folder for the unintended uses that I may or may not encounter during the day. :) the most consistent use is generally food prep and such as my knives are much sharper than dinner knives and we all know it! I imagine it'd be hard to cut food with a little Dragonfly...hence the lean towards the Delica. But most other EDC tasks don't require a bigger blade hence the lean towards the Dragonfly.

Dilemmas, bro.

If it's for food prep and general EDC duty I would personally go with the Delica because of the longer blade length. While not completely immune to oxidation, VG-10 has good rust resistance. I wouldn't keep it soaked in sea water for extended periods, but a dunking here and there won't present an issue. Just follow up with some reasonable maintenance on occasion. Delica's are made to take a beating in a diversity of environments.

Cutting up a piece of fruit, carving a sandwich in half, slicing up some cheese.....I like the extra blade length the Delica provides over the D'fly.

For the sake of more argument points for my inner decision battle, let's say if I don't use it for food prep... How often do you find yourself in a situation where it's mandatory to have a blade longer than two inches for the task at hand?

...If you mean as well, outside of the realm of yard work, gardening, and hiking/camping...probably 90% of my cutting needs could be accomplished with a D'fly. Opening letters and packages, cutting out coupons, trimming stray clothing threads, and cutting the occasional bit of rope and string don't require massive blade length. I like to cover the "just-in-case" scenarios so I opt for more blade length.

Thanks for all of your input (Two people. Whatever. You guys are cool.)! I think I will get the Delica4 and probably just get the Dragonfly2 some other time! Because if you aren't sure of your decision just don't make one, right? Ha.

As Gadgetman7 pointed out, check out the Salt 1 as it is basically the same with the Delica but with the H1 steel. It also doesn't have steel liners so it is lighter than the Delica while still giving you the longer blade.
That said, 90%+ of my cutting tasks are easily done by my dragonfly 2! It is an amazing knife that cuts much like a larger blade! Try one in your hand and you will love it!

I bought my little brother a serrated Tasman Salt, I was super impressed with that knife and it sounds like it fills your roll. I bought it for him since he's always rock climbing and sweating and never takes care of anything. I figured it was a good fit.

I don't. If you're more often then not knife tasks involve food prep, then the Delica is for you. For those rare moments where you wish you had a knife, the Dragonfly is more then adequate. I have cleaned fish, cut the muscle in conch when removing the meat, sliced raw flank steak for stir fry without a problem. The tasks, I'm sure would be easier with a larger knife, but make no mistake, the Dragonfly is more then up to the task.

If I'm cutting sugar cane. Since I don't live in Cuba, that ain't ever gonna' happen. For the sake of no more arguments, just buy both...that's what I did.
