(This was originally a much larger post, but it was lost. )

I am interested in feedback from the shamanistic types out there...you armchair psychologists, feel free to chime in, too.

I have had three dreams recently involving snakes and water.

In the first, while out hunting with my father, I was struck on the right foot by a snake. After the fact, I noticed several snakes under the surface of the creek, decaying.

In the second dream, I grabbed a snake that was swimming or floating close to me as I was wading. The snake was much stronger than expected, and bit me three times on the right hand before he escaped or I decided I was having too much fun.

The third dream, I saw 3 or 4 snakes floating close to the bank, and warned my female companion she might want to step back.

Thoughts? I went into more detail previously, but don't want to take the time to do it again right now.

Spectre I'm not a medicine man, in spite of what some people say, but if I were I wouldn't discuss something like this in public.

I was in an ndn group on WebTV for a while until I decided that though there may have been some real ndns there they didn't know anything about their own particular culture since they posted 99% URLs of different supposedly ndn sites.
I kept telling them that a real medicine man or woman would not under any circumstances put any real information on the internet.
But the fake ones will and you can always spot them quickly since the first thing they want is money. Real ndns don't charge for ceremony although donations of any kind, even money, will be graciously accepted. And that's the way it has always been done. But the individual desireing the ceremony is the one who sets the price, not the person who performs the ceremony.

The fact that the snakes have visited 3 times means something. Yangdu is the dream interpretation expert in this house so I'll ask her -- as soon as she gets back from Home Depot!

In Nepal these snake dreams can mean some very good luck in the future.

3 dreams.

Two fang holes, right foot.

Three fang holes, right hand...

but did you notice I had learned some caution by the third dream? ;)

No expert and very little actual knowledge, but most of the western people consider the snake to be a messenger. The "threes" evident here should be of great significance. Rusty could probably weigh in on this when he gets back. The messages are supposed to fit the circumstances of the individual - in my own situation, I would stay out of deep water, take only showers, and put a non-slip mat in the floor of the shower stall. My last "snake" dream had nothing to do with water (and I remember maybe 2-3 dreams a year, if that many) but I stepped out of the shower, next morning, hit wet tile instead of the mat, and spent the next month in a knee cast. "Course, it means absolutely nothing. Probably.

Spectre, Years ago I was a sort of guide/teacher to a close knit community in Virginia. I used the Tarot cards as a medium, and have learned through the years it doesn't matter what medium you use, its just being open to the energies that are present and telling what you NEED to know. Any symbolism can vary or change from reading to reading. So I guess what I'm trying to get out is to step back and let go of your emotions and intellect and look again at the dreams, what do you see? I hope this helps. The very fact that you are asking puts you half way to answers.

Major life change is my projected move to Alaska next year.

I'll be around a lot of water, it seems. :D

One thing I did find especially interesting, was the decomposing snakes under the water, in the first dream. ...now that I think about it, when I told my father my plans a few weeks ago, he was very excited. It seems he's always wanted to go to Alaska! I had never known. (Our conversation was after the first dream.)

[edit]In the first dream, I was going to meet my father, and met him at a stream, when I was struck. After I was hit, I had him shoot the snake, so we could take it to the ER with us.

I'm afraid I can't offer you much insight to the meaning of your dream, but I too have had many dreams involving animals. One of the most vivid had me sitting in the lowest branches of a tall hickory, looking down on an autumn valley in the Blue Ridge mountains. I hear a noise and look down to see a HUGE white grizzly standing on it's hind legs looking up at me from between my dangling feet. Before I could move the bear spoke in a friendly way, saying "Hello, how are you". This unnerved me to no end, and I jumped from the tree and ran down the mountain. The bear did not chase me. This dream occurred a few years ago but was very vivid, and was the only animal dream I remember were an animal spoke to me. It is frustrating to have vivid dreams that seem fraught with meaning but be unable to decipher them.
I would love to discuss them with someone who has knowlege of such things, such as a true NDN Medicine Man, but it seems they are even more rare than genuine Christians. :D

Patrick,

that's both a very neat and very sad dream. Think how rejected ole Ephraim felt!

Last night I dreamed I won the Powerball lottery and I bought all the khuks in the land! But then I woke up and realized it was only a dream and barfed:barf: all over!!!!;) Just kidding!:p

Well, I have had some training in Jungian dream analysis, but I can't make much out of that brief summary. Even with everything you can remember, one dream or a series of three, without the context of other dreams and what's going on in your waking life too, is not necessarily going to be clear, though it might be.

Dreams very often come in three acts -- I believe the common three-act plays are based on that universal reality. Sometimes all three in one night, sometimes on consecutive nights.... They are often unrelated on the surface but all have the same theme. If you have three vivid dreams in one night, or on consecutive nights, or in one week ... even though apparently completely unrelated ... they're usually saying the same thing in different ways, or developing the same theme further....

Basically the way Jungian analysis works is you tell the analyst your dreams in as much detail as possible -- it helps a lot to write it down immediately on waking up, keep a notebook by your bed -- don't wait even a few minutes or important details will fade from your memory. Then the analyst draws on his knowledge of symbols to throw out ideas, and you see which grab you and feel true. It's a cooperative process; it's not a matter of you just tell the analyst your dream and he tells you what it means. Some dreams are obvious to a trained analyst; many are not so easy and it can take a lot of work, from both of you....

P.S. Freudian dream analysis is quite different -- to a Freudian everything is very simple and the only problem is overcoming the client's "resistance" and forcing him to accept the analyst's interpretation. To a Freudian a snake is always a phallic symbol -- he'd have no problem at all tying together the decomposing snakes with your father and hauling in your "Oedipus complex" by the scruff of the neck -- it's all by rote, basically, and if the client doesn't think it makes much sense that's because of his "resistance" -- whenever the client disagrees with the analyst that's a sign of "resistance," a symptom of his neurosis....

As you might have guessed already I don't think much of the Freudian approach to dream analysis. In fact many Freudian-trained analysts are quite successful and do good work, but they're the ones who learn from experience to forget all their training.

The snake was generally considered a healing totem for American NDNs and was the sign for Evil for the Egyptians. It is most likely based more on whatever belief structure you are most familiar with. Avoid the pepperoni pizza before bed and you should be fine.

The snakes in the first dream were definitely gray. (I really couldn't tell on the second and third dreams.) The other snakes in the first dream appeared to be still coiled, but I could see small pieces come off them as the stream flew over them.

Spectre - Beware! There will be three ladies coming soon to your near future life! WoW ... !

Long time ago my mother had a dream - she saw my eldest sister being stranggled by a dark coloured, short and quite fat snake - not long after that a dark coloured, short and quite fat gentlemen asked my father for my eldest sister to be his wife!

BTW - we always consider a snake in a dream means a lady - three snakes means three ladies - a dozen of snakes means a dozen of ladies! WoW ... WoW ... WoW ... !!!

I am still waiting for a beautiful white snake to bite me in my dream :D !!!

Yangdu said you may have some serious competition ahead of you. If the snake had been white the dream is of a spritual nature and carrying with it some advice concerning your spiritual advancement.

This from the Sherpa Himalayan Dream Interpretation society.

Uncle,
I remember Yangdu saying that she had a dream about Terry's snake before she had ever seen it. This dream was shortly before the first time you came to visit us. Does her dream have any special meaning?
Tell her Hi & I can't wait to see you in Catoosa!!

No, the Terry snake dream was just a glimpse into the future.

As usual, we are looking forward to the Catoosa get together. I know we will have our usual fun and good time.
