Dreaming Spyderco
Over the last few weeks I have been thinking to myself: what would be the perfect Spyderco (for me). I started mixing different Spydie ingredients together and this is what I came up with:
Overall shape:
Like the old Endura. This is a shape that is comfortable in the hand, allows for a quick draw if carried tip down (which this one would be), and it is not bulky or overly large in comparison with the blade. Furthermore it is also good to look at and pure Spyderco.
The Blade:
The blade optimised for cutting and take a scary sharp edge. So it should have the same geometry as the much-loved Calypso jr., as this is one of the very best cutting modern folders. Flat gind combined with a thin relieve are a recipe for success IMHO.
For the steel VG10 seen to me the way to go, offering a good balance between edge holding, toughness and sharpenability. It also has the reputation of taking a very fine edge and love my edges scary sharp, the sharper the better. This may not be practical but, hey, this is my dream.
The Handle:
The handle should be comfortable and good-looking. That means that there should be no sharp edges on it. For material I am thinking carbon fibre or a micarta, though not the type use on the old Calypso as it smelled. These materials are strong, impervious to the elements and have an appealing surface structure. Why not G10 you say? Well I think it is time for some thing different, and black G10 has been done to death. The scales would be finished smooth so they won't tear my pockets. The clip would, as I have mentioned above, be positioned for tip down carry. It should be set about 1cm below the top of the handle, be a little shorter than the standard Spyderco clip, and be blackened for a low profile.
The Lock:
This is easy, the compression lock. I played with it a bit at the Paris show and liked it a lot. It should be more reliable than a linerlock and is smoother than a lockback.
This is my dream Spyderco. I call it the Phantom as it only exists in the mind, in mine and now in yours two!
What do you think of it? Should Spyderco make it? (I naturally think so! It would be a success.)
What would your dream Spyderco be like?
