Dremel Tool: Which model for multi purpose

Please advise: I am trying to decide if there is any particular model of Dremel would be a good choice for a variety of uses including grinding, drilling, sanding, polishing, polishing, etc. Any suggestions? For grinding I'd like to be able to do some fairly heaving blades such as axes, machetes.

For "multi-purpose" use, I would try and get a model (if possible?) that can run at SLOW speeds such as 300-400 rpm. I have one that the slowest speed is at least a few thousand rpm. For cleaning up rust, sanding and polishing various metal such as tools, it is useless.

In comparison, I have a flex shaft that can run as slow as desired, and it works great for tasks that the Dremel is too fast for.

I have a dremel 300 and it works nicely for many uses. You can adjust the speed from barely spinning to supersonic mess something up in 2 seconds speed.

i've got a 400 series and i love it. i don't really use it as much as i'd like, but when i do, it's great. it also came with a lot of extra options and a nice tool box. every man should have a dremel. :)

Thanks. Glad you said that. I was thinking I needed just a fast speed.

You do need fast speed. Dremel tools are high speed/low torque tools - directly opposite of drills and most other equipment that is low speed/high torque. Since dremel tools have almost no torque to speak of speed is your only asset. Trust me, you will need speed.

I just bought a dremel 4000 for 90 bucks. It is definitely a good tool that will be the most versatile and effective It's variable speed from 5000 all the way to 35000 rpm. I usually sharpen my machetes and hatchets using 20-30k rpm. Hope this helps.

belt sander
Dremel+knives= not good

Knifenut - I don't use my Dremel for sharpening rather just cleanup of the knife and bolsters for polishing or rust removal. I find it easier to tape off the scales then hold the knife in one hand the control the Dremel with the other using a felt wheel or wire brush. Are you suggesting a belt sander for that type of work as well?

Dremels can be effectively used with a sewing machine foot pedal, even the variable speed models.
I seldom use mine fast. As a matter of fact, the only Dremel I have used for years is the battery powered Mini Mite, but I don't use a Demel the way most people would.
