Never owned one, never thought I needed one, but I'm thinking the time has come to get one. So far the only intended usage I know of is to enlarge the nail nicks on some knives. But I know that once I have one, I may find waaay more uses for it than I ever thought. I understand that I can always buy attachments later, so what I'm mainly interested in here is advice on choosing the main Dremel power unit.

I haven't really shopped or looked seriously at them before - just cursory glances at the big box stores. I know there are many different models - more power, less power - numerous attachment kits - corded vs cordless - etc.

So, what should I look for and consider? I probably don't need the "top of the line" most expensive model; but I also don't want to end up with something that's under-powered, or a hassle to use. Help me out here, guys! ;)

Buy the basic plug in model and wait to add attachments until you have the actual need. I use mine for sharpening (axe, machete, mower blades, pruners), drilling (great for smaller holes in tight spots), grinding/shaping, buffing, cutting (bolts, nuts, thin metal), carving (wood, plastic) etching (metal), etc.

Very handy.

I also have a cordless model, but the juice on it always seems to fade at the times I need it most.:(

The best deals I have seen on these are usually the kits that go on sale around Christmas
