Dremmel tool questions

With the holidays fast approaching and everything, I'm getting into the gift shopping mode. After my wife got me the fabulous collection of Native American Flute Ensemble CD's last year....

I'm thinking that she really needs a handheld rotary tool. I saw a couple of Dremmels, a Ryobi, and some Black and Deckers.

I (err uhh, She) would prefer variable speed, the flex head extension and the AC power models. This wouldn't get a lot of use, so I'm kind of looking for more of a hobbyist's model than a pro's.

Any suggestions or things to avoid? All advice is greatly appreciated.

How do I set my laser printer to stun?

I had a variable-speed model with the flex-shaft attachment and burned it out in about 6 months. Instead of having it repaired they let me pay the difference and upgrade to the Heavy-Duty Flex-Shaft model model with the full variable speed foot-control. It's going strong after several years.

It may be more tool than you need and it's definitely not as versatile in terms of moving it around for household/outdoor tasks (I've since added a cordless model for this), but if you plan to work in one location it's worth a look. The price isn't really too much higher than the standard variable speed + attachment. Furthermore, it's really built to handle the flexible shaft, with a stronger motor, a heavier shaft, and a really durable handpiece; my experience indicated the standard tool was really working hard to use its add-on flex-shaft.

There is also another model that's like the standard mounted on a swivel-base with a permanent flex-shaft. I haven't used this but you might try to find info on it, could be a "happy medium."

I have a Dremel and a Ryobi.
I really like my Ryobi. You can set the spead on it and it has a different switch for off and on I find real handy.I also like the way it handles better with the shape of it.The Ryobi is smoother too I think.I know if I ever have to replace one I will buy another Ryobi.

I have a flex shaft I have it on my Dremel and I still use my Ryobi the most.I bought the attachment that will let me use the flex shaft on my Ryobi, but I haven't had a reason to change.
