Hello, everyone.
Is it possible to get a nice shine on a knife with a dremmel tool?
Is this done by knifemakers often? Does the blade get too hot? (I imagine it doesn't get too hot).
I was just thinking the easiest way to get pretty good shine on a knife is to use the little buffer attachments. Or is there another way?

On my opinion it is practically impossible. I use dremel a lot to shape handles, but it never work to blade polish. It is just too small and it is hard to applay polish even over entier surface, plus it is not powerfull enough - fast but not powerfull. It is more for small staff - like for guard or pommel. Fabric wheel for handdrill plus green rogue - this is what I use. However bench wheel grinder with fabric weel may be better.

Thanks, Vassili.

It's possible, yes. But it's hard to get a nice, even finish with a Dremmel because the wheel is so small. It's really not a good tool for the job.

I tried it on a knife of mine and the results were not pretty. It looks like crap but now I'm actually going to use the knife instead of just look at it. So I guess it's not all bad.

Yeah, it won't happen. Simple fact of the matter is that the contact area of any attachment/bit you use is too small to get an even finish over the entire blade, so you'll need a larger buffer or sander or whatever.

I've tried it too...no dice. Fortunately, my knife is already scratched up and gross looking, so it's no big deal.

Anyone have a link or source for large buffing wheels for bench grinders?

http://www.texasknife.com/ I trade with these folks for my supplies and they so far have been very helpful both in keeping me from over buying and suggesting stuff that I may have not thought about needing. I dont recomend companies that I dont actually have contact with and these folks have been a real godsend especially since this is a new thing for me to begin doing. their phone number is 1-888-461-8632 and ask for Trish.

I used a dremmel to polish off the bead blast finish on a Buck Mini Memtor. It now has a very 'utility ' look, and a lot less drag when cutting. No where near the look if I had the proper equipment. And it took a several hours to get it done. But on a 20 $ knife ,I'm happy with it.

I tried to buff out the finish of a blade with the Dremel and it came out real bad :grumpy: ( I guess I kinda expected that). Just to small for the job. Anyway I went back to the old fashion way and did it by hand  .
