I'm looking to slim down my collection. I'm getting rid of (or trying to) a lot of cheaper stuff that I bought early on, and I want to make what will be the last couple knife purchases I will make for the next few years at least.

I have an EDI Genesis (everyday carry), a Gerber EZ-out, and a CRKT Sealtac that I modified to be comfortable. I'm gonna buy a Nimravus, and a couple Stiff KISSes to take into the field.

I want one more knife, a medium-large folder to wear with a suit. A William Henry persian would be ideal except too far out of my price range ($250). I'm looking at 150 and below.

The Howard Viele Spyderco was my initial choice, but when I went to the store to fondle^H^H^H^H^H examine one, I noticed that the scales are asymetrical. On one side the scale drops away (so it looks like a bolster), on the other the scale goes the full lenght of the liner. Since this is a knife I'm mainly buying for looks that disqualified it.

So I guess I'm looking for a liner lock or lockback folder, 3-4" blade, with bolsters preferably, in black micarta or a dark wood, non-serrated, a drop-point or a spear point preferably (actually anything except a tanto), and under $150. Whew. I just realized how impossible this might be

Any suggestions? Some of the LDC cutlery stuff looks ideal but it's too expensive ($400+). I hope someone can help me out.

In reference to your question, looking at it through the glaze covered lust filled eyes of a Microholic I am forced

to recommend the MT Kestral in MA. I know its not really what you were looking for, but it is in the $140-$165 range and it's also a Microtech.

have you considered a spyderco full size calypso, j.d. smith or tim zowada? they don't have bolsters, but they are classy knives and would be a lot cheaper than some other choices.

Although it does not meet all points..... Take a look at a BenchMade 850. That's what I carry in above ref.

Check Boker Walter Brend series, picts at
KC web page.

Have you looked at Benchmade 330/850 Mel Pardue/Pardue-Pearl? ($70-$90)

Check also CRKT Mirage (not really what you asked for, but have more "classy" than "wild" look) - $45-$50

Also, SOG Gentelman comes into mind.

Generally, it will also depend what color/style suit you wear, what style watch, etc. - that's if you want to be picky

Personally, for this purpose I choose knives
that are simple and match the rest.

Have fun picking the right one!

The 850 Benchmade would meet your needs very well.

I was thinking about it.

A really crazy person would go with Vector (yeah!). But seriously, a Mini-SOCOM with a clip-point
chromium coated blade (do they have chromium coated manuals, by tha way?) would be kind of cool.

Hello Devildog,

Reading your desired specs made me think about a line of very nice folders made by Buck. One of my catelogs states that they have stainless steel bolsters and birchwood handle inserts. There were four different sizes listed, and they go by names such as Duke, Squire, Prince, etc.. These knives pretty much satisfy your list of requirements. The only thing about them that I don't particularly care for is that they can't be opened with just one hand, but then again that wasn't in your list of specifications anyway. One really nice thing about this line of knives is that the most expensive knife is still less than $45.00, so you won't come near your spending limit.

have fun,

You didn't say anything about clip vs clipless, so maybe you should look at Buck's website, where they have a link to Pete's Custom Knifeshop and you can custom design/order a Buck 110 hunter in BG-42 steel (clip point) with a selection of woods or horn for the scales, for under your limit.

I think a BG-42 in nickel-silver bolsters and water-buffalo scales ran about $130. This link has a photo (courtesy of BF member Alan):

For a real sharp looking dress up knife how about a Boye Cobalt folder, like this one that just sold here on the forums
http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/005029.html

They sure look sharp, and would be a great dress up knife. Not sure the retail, but if this one sold for $110 shipped, you can probably find a good deal.

And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold the great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads...And His tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth; and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
