My Tuf Cloth has got that dried up feeling. I read the instructions on the pack and it said odorless mineral spirits will "revive" it.

So I went to the local handyman store. Found the odorless mineral spirits. However, according to the label on the mineral spirits can, it said the spirits contain a certain chemical that may cause cancer.

It's just a warning. Is it that dangerous to apply mineral spirits on the Tuf Cloth?

I was wandering if anyone had tried this.

It's what was on there in the first place. Tuf cloth uses mineral spirits to carry their dry lube.
Just about everything in the world causes cancer. Dont drink it or bath in it and you'll probably be ok.
To answer your question, yes I have added it to my tuff cloth a few times.

Golok,
What's the local term for mineral spirits? What do I ask for at the hardware store? Mine's dried up too.
Thanks,

Ask or look for "mineral spirits." Should be located with other solvents and cleaners.

Make sure that you get the "odorless" kind.

Don't worry too, too much about the "cancer causing" part. That's just something that the makers, today, puts on almost any chemical solvent to cover their legal asses.

As long as you're not *_constantly_* washing your hands in it or taking towel-baths with the TuffCloth, you shouldn't have too, too much to worry about.

I still remember in organic chemistry lab how the professors (at Johns Hopkins, we're not talking about some mail-order college here!)warned us about using acetone to wash our hands. In "their day," it was considered the norm, but in the here-and-now, it's somehow changed into a deadly carcinogen -- to wit, he cited, his hands have yet to fall off even after being in the profession for more than three decades.

:)

Sure, it does pose an increased risk, but hell, you risk getting run over by a bus just crossing the street.

One additional tip/hint is that a lot of guys just use more than the recommended amount of TuffGlide lube on the pivot of their folders, and use their TuffCloth to wipe-up/clean-out the excess, effectively providing a consistent and constant source of renewal.

golok,
if you'd prefer, you can purchase some Tuf-Glide for use with the Tuf-Cloth. I tried the mineral spirits, but didn't like it so I decided on going with the Tuf-Glide which I ordered through a local dealer.

Good Luck

well.. mr Golok.. another option is to dab some tuff-glide onto the cloth.. have you been using yours lately? :p

You can only "wet" the cloth so many times with mineral spirits before it becomes a simple cloth soaked with mineral spirits! Point is you' re going to dry out the active chemicals that were originally in the cloth. Reactivate with Tuff Glide. A teaspoon or more to suit your tastes (no, don' t taste it!) will go along way. Although it may seem a bit pricey for the 8 oz. refill bottles, it is quite economical to use. Much cheaper than having to purchase 3 cloths alone.

One ounce = two tablespoons. One tablespoon = three teaspoons. One eight ounce bottle ( ~ $18.00 ) yields about 48 retreatments or roughly 38 cents per retreatment. Also, IIRC, there is a food grade mineral oil. I believe I once saw it in the pharmacy section of the supermarket.

Spyken, a big handyman/DIY store just opened near my place. And it is ACE Store, so they have all sorts of great stuff. I spotted one ACE Odorless Mineral Spirits.

It was written as such.

Sorry, Samo, no Tuf Glide. Should have bought one the last time.
