Drill chucks...

I was hoping some of you guys might be able to help me out. Never had to worry about this before, guess I've never needed to drill this large of a hole.

Anyways, drilling and tapping for a 3/8x18NPT thread which requires a 9/16" bit. Picked one up which fits a 1/2 chuck but both my cordless and my plug-in drill have what appear to be 3/8" chucks. Searching lowes, home depot and craftsman met with little success. Is anyone aware of a adapter to reduce from a 1/2" shank so I can use it with a 3/8 chuck?? :(

There are likely reducers available, but I doubt you'll find them at lowe's. You might be able to get a different chuck for one of your drills, but you would need to take the old chuck with you to make sure the new one would fit your drill.

Bunch of googling came up with zilch as far as 1/2-3/8 shank reducers. Did find an online source for 9/16S&D bit with 3/8 shank- be about $7 more than b&m pricing but since I can't use the 1/2" shank from the b&m store dunno if I got a choice!

The easy way is to get a 9/16 drill bit with a 1/4 or 3/8 shank. That's easily available; you're not the only one who has a drill with a 3/8 chuck. :)

This is the trick. Buy what is called a set of "jobber" bits. They will all fit in a 3/8 chuck. Snap-On sells a really nice Jobber Drill index.

I second the idea of switching it out to a 1/2" chuck. Gives you more options down the road when it comes to bit choices, and if can be swapped out if the drill dies.
