Drill press re-build?

I have an older Craftsman floor standing Drill Press. From pictures I have seen, I believe it to be a mid 70's model. I would like to re-build it and put in a new spindle, chuck, bearings, Etc. Is this something I can do or do I need to take it somewhere to have it re-built? It has all cast iron casing and weighs a ton so I really would not want to ship it somewhere? I do not have a manual so I really do not have part #'s and stuff. Would I need any special tools or can I take it apart in keep everything in sequence? just not sure what to expect? Also, the work table has to raised by hand after unclamping it. There is not a hand crank for it. Can I retro-fit it to a crank type system? Thanks, DonO

Not as difficult as you might think to rebuild. Finding parts like cranks may require a model number found on the press but I'm sure there are a number of retrofit items floating around. Google is your friend for finding new bearings if you don't have a bearing store close at hand...here is a simple video of all you might need to know....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWwmgC_TkBQ

Thanks guys! I'll give all those sources a try! I'd love to get his one back to new condition because it is so robust and heavy duty. Plus, I only paid $100.00 for it and it seems to be of much better quality than the newer ones. I doan need no steenking lasers!

RIGHT!!!!!.....It may just need a GOOD Cleaning and adjustment to the quill if the bearings don't feel like they are dragging. I have found bearing locally for rebuilds that are top notch compared to the import stuff that Sears offers for repair parts just sayin....

I have the same drill press-- bought around 1976 at the sears in Springfield
Missouri. Still running strong today. I do occasionally have to make a belt for
those small pulleys. (Parachute Cord)
Ken.

You can try Motion Industries for the bearings and any belts you may need. As mentioned above they probably have better brands (FAG, SKF etc) than what Sears may be offering. Plus they likely have what you need on the shelf at least for the bearings. They have a bunch of stores around the US. It looks like there is one in Monroeville PA. Have fun!
