Woocraft" catalog has one for $42.99. It makes a 2 3/4" wide to 1/4" depth cut in 1 pass. I was think (dangerous) chalk the slabs up on my milling table on the drill press and in 1 pass it should make them dead flat. Has anyone tried this before?

I have used one of these planers in my drill press for years --- makes it easy to ensure the sides of the scales are parallel. My process is to sand one side flat, then attach the flat side to a flat piece of barstock (I attach with double sided carpet tape), then keep making passes lower & lower until you get the thickness you want. I use very light cuts.
