What do you take along to make holes in things? I mean deeper holes like in wood (not just nicking a slit in leather, for example)... which can spare you a lot of cordage for some applications.

Side question... how do you cut square notches in things?

deeper?

I use the awl on my SAK to make shallow(1.5 in, 3.3 cm) holes... could bore from both sides to double that.

I've never had to do anything deeper than that, though I suppose a drill/auger bit welded to a US Army cleaning rod handle would be compact, and could be spun with a fire bow.

Square notches are made the same way V shaped notches are- only more so.

Make 2 cuts to edge the notch (| |), then slice out v shaped chips to get the notch (| \/ | )

I have to second par's technique, it works great for me with my SAK Soldier model.

With square cuts in wood, I've used a SAK or Leatherman with a saw to make the 90 degree cuts and then use the large screwdriver as a chisel to remove the cutout section.
