Apologies in advance for this sacrilegious question....*prepares to hide behind shield*

But would it be possible to drill a (Spyderco-like) opening hole in the blade of a Sebenza Classic?

Would there be room for it?

Would it weaken the blade?

If possible, who could I get to do it?

Thank you.

I don't think you could drill a hole in a hardened knife blade.

Actually, I've thought about this a lot. What I would do is have some dovetails cut on the blade spine with something like a wire EDM machine. Then I have have a small additional piece made with the hole already in it and it would also have mating cuts to the ones on the blade spine.

Then I'd use a vice and gently press fit the new piece in. (Removing the old thumbstud as well)

I have also considered getting a spare "Cobra Hood" from spyderco, and attaching it somehow.

 The only answer I can give you is that I wouldn't try it (and I like the spydie hole on my Mouse). That being said, I hope you are hiding behind a VERY strong shield! ;)

You can "burn" a hole in the blade with a machine called a "sinker" EDM. Doesnt use a wire, but utilizes an electrode made of graphite or copper. I would talk to Chris about this, I think it would void the warranty. I personally have access to a sinker, as well as several other machines. Lucky me, lowly cnc machinist!:D :D

You can drill a lot in hardened steel, it just takes a long time and you can't use cheap drill bits. Well you can use cheap bits, just use some lapping compound to do the cutting, it takes even longer though. You could even try a small grinding wheel and a Dremel. All of this could overheat the blade unless you are very carefull. You could also try doing an anneal, the drilling and then rehardening.

Yes, it will weaken the blade, but are you doing a lot of prying with the blade anyway? As for who will do it, I doubt many custom makers would, as most don't like to work on other maker's blades. It is your knife though, change it to what you want. Don't expect Reeve to service the modified one though the same as he would an unmodified one.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I'll give it a miss. I'm far to inexperienced to do something like this.

Guess I'll have to find a custom with framelock and a hole!

Perhaps you could call CRK and inquire about the possibility of having a Sebenza made for you with that option. Probably cost you some extra bucks, but it might be worth it to you.
good luck!

The TnT tractor beam is pulling me in......

Seriously though, I think there would be a good market for Sebenza's with a hole. It would broaden the offer.

Please make one Mr Reeves. Please :)

Yes, you can drill into hardened steel. I put Spyderco holes in both my large and small CRKT Kaspers. It took a while but they turned out pretty good. On a knife as expensive as the Sebenza, you should let a custom maker do the work.

You may want to put a simulated hole by sticking a piece of masking tape cut to the size of the hole you want to make to see if your thumb will be able to open the blade. On the Spydercos and other folders that have the opening hole, the blade itself and/or the handle are designed to optimize the use of the hole. The Sebenza isn't designed that way.
