drilling a hole in a tang

I have tried drilling thru a hardened tang with no success, yet once by mistake did so with ease after I had attached scales. I had glued scales to tang and was drilling out holes and for some reason, brain freeze probably, drilled thru in a place where the tang had no hole, yet the bit went right thru. I am afraid to try this again thinking that the bit will not penetrate the tang as usual.

Any suggestions?

Get a masonry bit from lowes. I've had good success with Bosch bits. I use them to drill through my Buck 110's to ad a thumbstud.

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle...I have never thought about trying a masonry bit on hardened steel.

I just used one to drill through the handle of my file knife I'm making. The file is still at full hardness. :)
